Sounds Like: THIS IS A NEWS ITEM FROM AN IRISH PAPER ;Theresa's memories of Butch Moore General NewsTHERESA O'Donnell's poetry writing as a young teenager made Eurovision history for Ireland and the late Butch Moore an internationally known singer. This week the Suncroft woman looked back on how her poem Walking The Streets in the Rain became such a major success and how her scribbling led to meeting her pin-up idol, Butch Moore and becoming friends with the singer. "I was 16 when I wrote it and it qualifying for the Irish Eurovision didn't cut much with me until I was told my idol, Butch Moore was singing it. To me that is what he was like, like Westlife is to the 14 and 15-year-olds today," adds Theresa.Butch's passing last week came as a terrible shock to Theresa who says she spent days crying at the loss of a man who became her friend and stayed one, even though he moved to live in the US.Theresa has very special memories of that Ireland participation in Naples and of how her friendship developed with Butch. "I can't really remember when I met him the first time because I was shaking. He was a very quiet and inoffensive man but he was in a worse state than me because he was afraid he would let Ireland down."His return to Ireland, after coming fourth, was greeted by crowds in Dublin airport. While Theresa wrote the words toWalking The Streets in the Rain , the melody was composed by Newbridge men George Prendergast and Joe Harrigan. They were members of the Curragh Army Band and a friend Anne Rice, now Coogan, passed on some of Theresa's poems to them through her dad Pat Rice, who was also a band member. Theresa recalls Joe Harrigan had the greatest input into the song and she was delighted when she first heard her poem put to music.Since then Theresa has written over 40 successful songs and with her son, Pierce. They won the Cavan International Song contest once and came second on another occasion. The win brought a phonecall from the US from Butch to congratulate them.
