This is what the UK industry has been waiting for, a
fresh, dynamic singer who is poised to take over the
R&B scene with her indelible vocals and innovative
sound.
Spearheading the new generation of British music,
Sheya is emerging from the R&B underground into the
mainstream market; and to major acclaim. Patiently
waiting until now, her heart warming vocals are on
display for the world to hear.
The Heaven’s opened…
On May 31st 1987, in South West London, Jazz singer
Margaret Brown gave birth to Elleeshea Brown, a day
which would potentially change the UK R&B scene
forever.
It is clear that Sheya’s music lies deep within her
family’s adulation for Jazz and Gospel Music, her
father, renowned vocal trainer, Junior Skeete, would
further secure her fate as a musician; it was
undeniably her destiny to sing.
Inspired by iconic artists such as, Erykah Badu,
Lauryn Hill, Teedra Moses, India Arie and D’angelo,
Sheya has also drawn much of her musical influence
from other worldly sensations like, the Isley
Brothers, Earth, Wind and Fire and a plethora of other
heavyweight Jazz and Blues singers.
“I’ve had a lot of inspiration from a lot of great
artists but overall I have always been compelled by
Beyonce’s growth as an artist, her consistent hit
songs and her outstanding stage performance.
To me she is someone that I am aspiring to be as great
as,†Sheya confidently admits.
Finding her way…
In the era of the UK Hip hop explosion, Sheya began to
explore her versatility as an artist; she knew she
wanted to be a star so it was only natural to follow
the pop culture of that time.
She began Rapping in 2000 and used this new found
expression to voice her emotions to the UK Hip hop
audience.
“It was an expression through music, MCing then was a
craze it was still popular with my peers but I wasn’t
feeling it, so I began Rapping, to me it was like
poetry on a beat, a way for me to release some of the
things I was going through at that time,†she
reminiscently confirms.
In 2002 Sheya formed Horror Squad alongside MC
brothers, KD and Rowdie. This group of street styled
musicians was aptly named after the successful
community based radio station Horror FM.
“This was where I learnt the fundamentals of the music
industry. I accomplished a lot; I grew both as a
person and an artist.†Managed by J and Tishan of
Horror FM, Sheya took to the airwaves gaining the
confidence and recognition needed both as a Rapper and
Vocalist. “I learnt so much in this period of my life;
the most important lesson learned was that I was not a
group artist.
I knew that my shining would be solo, where I could
have more creative control and be appreciated more for
my talent, vocal ability and song writing skills.â€
2005 was a pivotal year for the highly underrated
artist. It was at this time during a music session;
Shawn from Cash Management heard Sheya sing and was
immediately struck by her talent and vocal range.
It would take just three months to sign the dynamic
artist and begin the work needed to solidify an
illustrious career in music. In 2006 ‘The Studio’ was
built in Croydon and Sheya was introduced to Garbz,
the R&B/Hip hop super-producer who would inevitable
make Sheya a household name.
With the studio complete and the musical union of
Garbz and Sheya harmonious, the hard grafting began.
“Much of my time was spent in studio. We (Sheya and
Garbz) spent most of the time building up my song
portfolio, song writing and vocally training. It was
from pen to paper to the booth daily,†she vividly
enthuses.
All the way to the top…
Now at the tender age of 20, the latest face of R&B is
ready to catapult her music to another level. Her
debut single ‘Dream Come True’ ft. Young Pro, has been
added to the Choice FM UK Cuts play-list, BBC 1xtra DJ
Seani B’s Hotshots and regular air-play on community
radio stations nationwide.
Having just completed the video ‘Dream Come True’,
this single will undoubtedly set the charts ablaze,
increasing her ever growing fan base. “I have and
remain living and breathing for music. This is what I
was born to do, this is what I am.†With two other
singles, ‘The Meaning Of Love’ and ‘Turn The Speakers
Up’ soon to follow, Sheya is targeting music for all
to appreciate.
“I want to be remembered as one of the most prominent
artists from out of the UK, who paved the way for
others to follow.â€
‘Dream Come True’ is now available for exclusive radio
plays and press reviews.
