Tekai "Kai" Hicks is the sweet and tangy lady from around the way who just happens to be an exciting and soulful entertainer. Her current, yet to be titled, project driven by what she refers to as "a loss of love and depth in popular music," is an enigma. Kai is a blend of R&B, soul, neo-soul, blues, and jazz. When one listens to her project or attends her live show they feel like they've taken a ride thru the past, present, and future. When Kai was a child she was influenced by her father, who sang background for Al Greene, and greats like Anita Baker, Etta James, Regina Belle, and Donny Hathaway. Kai, a Houston, TX native began pursuing a music career in 1997. Kai has become a staple and mainstay on the Houston music scene. Her talent, no-nonsense work ethic, and vibrant personality have led to some truly amazing opportunities. She cemented a position with national recording artist Gary Mays and Nu Era. That position led her to open for Mary J. Blige, Fred Hammond, and others for a 2004 Stellar Awards post party performance. No dummy to business, Kai knew she needed to get herself in front of other audiences. Her drive led her to secure a headlining position at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe in Houston, TX and many other showcases at some of Houston's finest live entertainment clubs. The Red Cat is the place for musicians to go when unwinding after gigs. That smart move allowed her to showcase her talent, sing with and background for the Who's Who of great musicians, singers, and rappers, including Stokley of Mint Condition, Bilal, LeToya Lukett, J Holiday, Melanie Daniels, and long list of others. Kai is currently collaborating Jive artist UGK, Atlantic artist Mike Jones, and Rap-a-lot artist Scarface on their current and upcoming CDs.A grown woman speaking on grown up things is a force to be reckoned with. Like you and I, Kai has lived a life full of ups and downs. What’s so special is that Kai can articulate all of the things that we feel and can't put into words. It's a special feeling you get when you are at Kai's show and she performs original cuts like What's Up, Supernatural, The Getaway, and Chemistry. The crowds are instantly engaged and seem to magically know the words to the hook by the second verse. To see an audience merge with an artist like that is a transforming feeling.Kai is a bright new star in a dark universe. In a music industry full of muck and bubble gum music, she is a star to guide the way.Dont just take my word for it. Listen for yourself.-Hollywood
