If I were stranded on a desert island, I’d be okay as long as I had ‘Seventy Six Trombones,’ ‘All At Sea,’ ‘Walking In Memphis,’ ‘Mr. Jones,’ ‘New York, New York’ (Ryan Adams, not Sinatra), ‘I’m Shipping Up To Boston,’ ‘59th St. Bridge Song,’ ‘New York, New York’ (okay, I decided I needed Frankie, too), ‘Sympathy for the Devil,’ ‘Enter Sandman,’ ‘Positively 4th Street,’ ‘Take Your Mama,’ ‘Thunder Road’ (Live 1975-85 version), ‘Dock of the Bay,’ ‘Ants Marching,’ ‘Two of Us,’ ‘Shame on You,’ ‘Baba O’Reilly,’ ‘For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her,’ ‘Open All Night’ (Nebraska version) ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings,’ ‘Comfortably Numb,’ ‘Sweet Home Alabama,’ ‘Tangled Up In Blue,’ ‘Invisible Touch,’ ‘Open All Night’ (yeah, I’m gonna need the Live in Dublin Sessions Band version, too), ‘I’m From New Jersey,’ ‘Penny Lane,’ ‘Almost,’ ‘Call Me Al,’ ‘Sweet Baby James,’ ‘Pride (In the Name of Love),’ ‘Dead or Alive’ (unplugged), ‘Maggie May,’ ‘Kathleen,’ ‘Pinball Wizard,’ ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ ‘Rain King,’ ‘Sloop John B,’ ‘Born to Run’ (Chimes of Freedom version), ‘Born to Run’ (the album…oh, come on, you knew that was coming), ‘Say Goodbye,’ ‘Closer to Fine,’ ‘Twentysomething,’ ‘Disarm,’ ‘I Wanna Be Sedated,’ ‘Jersey Girl’ (the Tom Waits original…something about those razor blade vocals…), ‘Hey Jude,’ ‘Beautiful Day,’ ‘The Boxer,’ ‘I Want It That Way,’ ‘Boys of Summer’ (even though I know it’s a little sacrilegious…the Ataris cover), ‘Uncle John’s Band,’ ‘Tripping Billies,’ ‘Raining in Baltimore,’ ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ (living on a desert island is kind of like being down the shore, right?), ‘Something in the Way She Moves,’ ‘Till There Was You’ (the Beatles version from Anthology).
“‘Allow me to explain about the theatre business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.’ ‘So what do we do?’ ‘Nothing. Strangely enough, it all turns out well.’ ‘How?’ ‘I don’t know. It’s a mystery.’â€.....“‘Is this heaven?’ ‘No…its Iowa.’â€.....“Luca Brasi held a gun to his head, and my father assured the bandleader, that either his signature or his brains would be on the contract. That’s a true story.â€.....“‘Ain’t gonna be no rematch.’ ‘Don’t want one.’â€.....“If I’m wrong then we’re at war…God help us all.â€.....“I do have a test today. That wasn't bullshit. It's on European socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European. I don't plan on being European. So who cares if they're socialists? They could be fascist anarchists. It still doesn't change the fact that I don't own a car.â€.....“Ray, when someone asks you if you're a God, you say ‘YES!’".....“We’re gonna need a bigger boat!â€.....“I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me. Years ago we had the church. That was only a way of saying - we had each other. The Knights of Columbus were real head-breakers; true guineas. They took over their piece of the city. Twenty years after an Irishman couldn't get a fucking job, we had the presidency. May he rest in peace. That's what [black people] don't realize. If I got one thing against [them], it's this - no one gives it to you. You have to take it.â€.....“‘I want a guy who can play 36 holes of golf, and still have enough energy to take Warren and me to a baseball game, and eat sausages, and beer, not lite beer, but beer. That's my ad, print it up.’ ‘“Fatty who likes golf and beer.†Gee, Mary, where are you gonna find a gem like that?’â€.....“I just slid my ticket across the bar and said ‘Sorry, guys, I gotta see about a girl.’â€.....“’Why are you so good to me, Forrest?’ ‘You’re my girl.’â€

Newarkers, because despite the horseshit, so many of them keep breathing, working, and believing; Jackie Robinson, because the greatest qualities a person can have are the ability to stand up when something is wrong and the inability to give up; teachers, because they give so much so selflessly; Robin Williams, because sometimes a good laugh can change your whole world; John Irving, for teaching me how to use the semi-colon; Bruce Springsteen, because he calls out injustice with songs that are as beautiful as they are angry; Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Kennedy, for providing an example of leadership based not on desire for power but a desire to serve; Katie Thornton, for always telling me I'm making a mistake, letting me make my mistakes, and never saying 'I told you so' when I figure it out; and Pete Thornton, for running a Boys Club, raising a family, and teaching me that the only reason you really go to hell is for letting something that shouldn't be stand.
