About myself :
When I was at the age of 18, I listened to Hardrock (e.g. Deep Purple), Psychedelic Rock (e.g. Pink Floyd), Symphonic Rock (e.g. Kayak) and Cosmic- or Synthesizer music (e.g. Tangerine Dream). As I grew older, also music had changed. New Wave and Punk Rock changed the whole musicscene, and I became funned of Depeche Mode and the Sex Pistols. Slowly, extreme musicstyles (e.g. hardrock and punk) melted together... hard rock became metal and bands like Iron Maiden and Motorhead changed the scene. Eventually, it was Metallica that changed how metal sounded; the sound became far more dynamic. On the other hand hard rock stood by itself and became more symphonic. Bands like Boston proved that melodic rock wasn't dead either. European bands like Sky, Earth and Fire, Kayak invented a completely new sound. They combined classical music and rock into symphonic rock. Goth metal added a voice to this sound, and that's where we stand nowadays. From a totally different side came another genre : "Trash". This was hi-speed metal: for example played by Sepultura and followed System of a Down and Korn, their voices sounded very raw and their play was sometimes very fast...it developed continiously and eventually "GruntRock" was born. Nowadays, there are so many rockstyles, but I like them all..
In June 2007 I got an email from my daughter about the next Female Metal Voices Fest in Wieze, here in Belgium. I went to this FMVF website where I found the band lists for Friday the 19th October and Saturday the 20th October. When I looked at these lists, there where a few bands I didn't know of, so I went looking about information on them. Through their MySpace websites, I found much information about many good bands like Epica (and through them Kamelot), After Forever, Nightwish, etc. I liked their music, and was suprized that we even had a good bands in Belgium. But the breakthrough came with the discovery of Stream of Passion (looking onto the net for other female fronted bands). I liked them a lot because of their unique style, the unique voice of Marcela Bovio, and the violin that could be heared through these songs. Later on I discovered Ayreon through Stream of Passion's former guitarist Arjen Lucassen (now Eric Hazebroek) who set up and launched Stream of Passion. As of today I own every (normal buyable) album of Stream of Passion, Ayreon and Star One (another great project of Arjen Lucassen). Arjen Lucassen has three projects : Ayreon, Star One, Ambeon (Stream of Passion isn't a project, but a band). The third project of Arjen, called Ambeon, is not my cup of tea (only one album of it came out). The second former (female) guitarist of Stream of Passion, Lori Linstruth, I like a lot too. Her guitarplay is just awesome!!! She plays on the last Ayreon album 01011001, together with Michael Romeo. She's now Arjen's personal manager! It's thanks to the projects of Ayreon, which contains many good vocalists of other bands, I got to know these other bands too, like Symphony X, Katatonia, Blind Guardian, etc. I hope Arjen Lucassen will create a second Star One album again (again with Damian Wilson, Russel Allen, Robert Soeterbroek, Floor & Irene Jansen and Joost van den Broek. I just loved the first album of Star One, can't wait for the next...
