Nella mitologia greca classica Procuste (dal termine greco Προκρούστης, Prokroûstes, che significa "lo stiratore") è il soprannome di un brigante greco di nome Damaste che, appostato sul monte Coridallo, in Attica, lungo la via sacra tra Eleusi e Atene, aggrediva i viandanti e li straziava battendoli con un martello su di un'incudine a forma di letto scavata nella roccia o metallica. I malcapitati venivano infatti stirati a forza se troppo corti, o amputati qualora sporgessero dal letto. Ulteriori interpretazioni del mito (che divennero predominanti) affermavano invece che Damaste possedesse due letti, uno molto corto e uno molto lungo: egli tormentava e uccideva i viandanti stirando quelli di bassa statura sul letto lungo e amputando le membra di quelli di alta statura avanzanti dal letto corto. Damaste fu sconfitto e ucciso da Teseo che lo incontrò mentre si recava da Atene a Trezene; egli lo costrinse allo stesso supplizio che imponeva alle sue vittime.

Con la locuzione "letto di Procuste" o "letto di Damaste", derivata da questo mito, si indica il tentativo di ridurre le persone a un solo modello, un solo modo di pensare e di agire, o più genericamente una situazione difficile e intollerabile o una straziante condizione di spirito.

Il progetto Damaste prende definitivamente forma nel 2007, emergendo dalle nebbie di anni spesi nella ricerca della tecnica, dell’identità musicale e degli elementi che fossero in grado di esprimere pienamente questa condizione tormentosa di spirito che si annida nelle viscere del progetto.
In seguito ad un difficile ma inevitabile periodo di cambi di line-up, ad oggi i Damaste si compongono di:

L’inizio del 2008 ha visto la nascita del primo demo-cd, “The Crumbling Vaults of the 5th Sun”, imperniato su moderne sonorità Melodic Death-Thrash.

In classic greek mithology Procrùstes (derived from greek Prokroustês, meaning "the stretcher") was the nickname of a bandit named Damaste, who had his stronghold on the hills near Mount Coridallos, in Attica. There, lying in ambush near the sacred road between Eleusis and Athens, he used to assault every passerby and mangle them with an hammer after having them laid down on a rocky or metallic bed-shaped anvil. If the "guest" proved too tall, Damaste would amputate the excessive lenght; if the victim was found too short, was then stretched out on the rack until she fit. Later versions of this myth (which became later predominant) stated he possessed two beds, a short one and a long one: he liked to torment and kill the short captives stretching them on the first bed and maiming the tall ones on the second. Damaste was eventually defeated and killed by Theseus, who encountered the bandit while on his journey from Troezens to Athens: he "fitted" Procrustes to his own bed and cut off his head and feet.

Today, the expression "procrustean bed" explains an attempt to force people in conforming to an arbitrary standard, a uniformed and massified way of thinking and acting. More generically, it means an hard or intollerable situation, or an exruciating condition of spirit.
The project Damaste takes definitely shape in 2007, emerging from the fog of years spent in a quest for the technique, the musical identity and the musicians able to fully express this tormenting condition of spirit nesting in the bowels of the project.

After an hard but unavoidable period of changes in the line-up, today Damaste are composed by:

The beginning of 2008 saw the birth of the first 4-track demo-cd, “The Crumbling Vaults of the 5th Sun”, pivoting on a modern Melodic Death-Thrash sound.

By listening to this four-tracker CD one gets an impression of these guys as very experienced musicians with many years behind them, even though it is not the case.
Drumming is fresh and diabolical; the vocals are much in the front, straight-edge and delivered with attitude and power of youth. I enjoyed each second of this rather short demo and I’m now desperate for more from Damaste.

Questo è stato l’unico pensiero passatomi per la mente dopo il primo ascolto di “The Crumbling Vaults of the 5th Sun”, demo d’esordio di questo agguerrito combo di Brescia.

METALLIZED (ITA) 80/100

[...] la componente strumentale [...] trova ampio respiro grazie ad un sezione ritmica deflagrante e un guitar work da capogiro. [...] indubbiamente i padiglioni auricolari gioiscono per una serie di soluzioni micidiali, estremamente coinvolgenti perché dell’indubbio impatto.

Ma siamo sicuri sia solo un demo di debutto? No perchè, per perizia tecnica, struttura dei pezzi, affiatamento, i bresciani Damaste sembrano avere un'esperienza almeno decennale.

ROCK HARD 8.5/10

Non hanno certo perso tempo i bresciani Damaste: dopo aver trovato un assetto definitivo in termini di line-up solamente un anno fa, sono infatti riusciti a dare alle stampe un'autoproduzione estremamente matura tanto nella forma quanto nella sostanza, che esalta il background death del gruppo ed allo stesso tempo lascia intravedere notevoli potenzialità. L'impatto dei vari brani presentati è infatti assolutamente roccioso e compatto, grazie ad un songwriting maturo e di grande impatto; la tecnica si rivela essere di tutto rispetto, tanto che al di là dell'indiscutibile aggressività messa in campo, ogni singola sfumatura strumentale si fa apprezzare per spessore e qualità (basti ascoltare l'opener "Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age" per capire di quale pasta sia fatta la band). Pathos epico e brutalità si fondono in un'unica entità nell'universo sonoro targato Damaste, un gruppo potenzialemente in grado di raggiungere traguardi estrememente importanti.

Un breve narrato introduttivo e ben presto "Flooded Kingdoms Of The Ice Gate" inizia la sua marcia, poderosa ed inarrestabile, e nemmeno la successiva "Dreadful Deviancy" si lascia prendere dal fascino della velocità o dalla ricerca melodica [...] anche se non mancano break e cambi di tempo improvvisi e spezzacollo.
