Meddle formed in the surrounds of an old run down factory tucked away down a hidden driveway in Auckland. Conceived as a three piece free-style-jam band, Meddle has grown to encompass the diverse influences of its co – creators.
Chris Brunner (vocals/guitar) has developed a vocal style which takes much from the blues, while also being compared to singers like Jim Morrison and Eddie Vedder. Finding influence not only musically but poetically in Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, ‘Nirvana’ and of course ‘The Doors’. His guitar playing varies between solid chord structures and frantic distorted walls of sound, including both gentle and savage lead breaks. Where Chris is somewhat reserved as a frontman – Brad Hemmingston (Bass) picks up the slack by thrashing about the stage, climbing speaker stacks, and generally destroying any environment he is placed in. Taking his influences from acts such as ‘The Mars Volta,’ ‘The Jimi Hendrix Experience’, and John Lennon Brad is born to the rhythm and with no training (formal or informal) he has mastered his instrument with a unique grace. Rough edged and heavy, Brad finds plenty of room for winding walks on the fret board which give the songs a truly climatic feel. Mince Matty Smith (Drums) himself is not formally trained, which has helped him shape his own blend of styles & techniques. He provides every song with solid structure and jaw dropping fills. Matty combines styles from David Russell Batiste Jr, to John Bonham, to fuse together the feel of the blues, the flare of funk, and the energy of rock and roll. His rhythm and timing are unique while he commands his drum kit under his four hammering limbs which gives Meddle such a raw and heavy edge.
Combined each member brings his instrument to the forefront of the stage show, all tying in together form a unique collective song writing talent and high energy live show. Jamming instrumentals throughout the set that take on a life of their own and change accordingly, bringing something natural and free to the Auckland music scene.
