Belfast quintet Sparks Fly's sound is heavily influenced by artists as diverse as The Kinks, Nick Drake and early AC/DC with a smattering of Zeppelin thrown in for good measure. Effortlessly bridging the musical gap between the epic and the intimate, their songs tell stories with heartfelt choruses and strong arrangements, as opposed to concentrating on flamboyant guitar wizardry. That's not to say you won't be dazzled by their instrumental skills, though — they base their sound on a three-guitar/three-part harmony combination, backed up by a driving rhythm section, courtesy of Steve on bass and drummer Raymie.
They don’t get hung up on labeling themselves or their sound – the charm of Sparks Fly’s music is it’s accessibility and broad appeal. Their songs fuse complex yet subtle arrangements with uplifting melodies and sharp lyrical observations which has seen them compared to Supergrass, Doves and the White Stripes.
Successful gigs at Belfast venues such as the Spring & Airbrake with rising stars such as The Kinetiks and AJ Suzuki, and recent radio play on BBC 6music, U105 and Feile FM have increased their fanbase and the band aim to capitalise on this by releasing their first three track EP in September, which will be accompanied by several live dates around Northern Ireland.
