WHAT IS A POETRY SLAM?
Slam is competitive performance poetry. Poets perform their original works and are judged on a scale of 0 to 10 by members of the audience.
Think of poetry reading as an Olympic sport and you're on the right track. Low scoring poets are eliminated at the end of each round until somebody wins.
This is a fully interactive process in which the crowd is expected and encouraged to cheer, boo, clap, bang your head against a wall or have pleasure induced convulsions to try to influence the judges’ scores. Whatever reaction the poem produces is fair game. Rioting is discouraged, but not strictly forbidden.
THE RULES
-Each poem must be of the poet's own construction
-Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) to read one poem in each rounf, if the poet goes over, points will be deducted from the total score. After four minutes, the poet is disqualified.
-The poet may not use props, costumes, or musical instruments
-Of the scores the poet received from the five judges, the high and low scores are dropped, and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0.0-30.0.
-The Star City Slam is a three round bout with 9-13 poets in the first round; 5-7 poets advancing to the second round; and the two highest scoring poets going head-to-head in the final round.
-Once you win the Star City Slam, you may never again use the same three poems to compete. Doing so will automatically diqualify you. (The only exceptions will be the City Championship in January and NPS Team Finals Night in April when you can use any poems you choose.)
NO REPEAT
Tired of hearing the same poems over and over AND OVER again?
Then you'll be glad to hear that at the Star City Slam a winning poet can never again compete with ANY of the poems they used to win.
