I'm driving down Cheshire Bridge Road late this afternoon when I pass a little building on the east side of the street.
It's just a glimpse, but the colors and shapes are very strong, and I return in a few minutes to look again.
As I'm taking this picture, a very hip woman in jeans and a t-shirt walks up and asks me what I think.
I tell her it's beautiful, and she asks if I would like to meet the artist, an Ethiopian woman who is inside the restaurant.
As she leads me through the door, I see a silver-skinned cell phone stuck in her back pocket.This is Lily Hagos. She is an Ethiopian artist who is attempting to revive the traditional iconography of Coptic Christians in Ethiopia.
She is very tiny, and quite shy in her delivery.
She only shakes hands after I leave mine out for a few moments, but when she does, it's firm. I ask if I can take a reference photo of some of the paintings she has with her, and she consents.
After I take the first photo, she asks if she can be in one of the pictures with her work. Of course I say yes, and she quickly squats in front of the chairs where we've arranged the paintings.
