About Me

I play tenor and alto sax and compose, arrange, record and produce my own stuff. I have a leaning towards fusion music with a bit of bite (i.e. a groove!) and like to mix harder dance, latin house, funk, rock and African/Arabic beats with jazzier harmonies and melodic lines (actually anything I happen to be into at the time!). Currently I'm focusing on my new fusion band project Baby Lion which aims to mix the cerebral with the sensual! I also regularly session for other artists as a sax soloist and horn arranger and have played with a few well-known artists in the past.
I took up sax aged 15 after dabbling with the recorder (doesn't every kid play the recorder at some point?!), violin, flute and piano. I thought it was a pretty glamorous instrument to play but then started learning Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz solos from records and realised there was a lot more to it that standing around on stage looking cool! After playing in various small jazz combos, big bands and "alternative" goth/punk bands at school (!), I joined a band made up of some great local players who turned me onto Weather Report, Herbie Hancock and jazz fusion in general. I also discovered Steely Dan and was really into that crossover style.

These days I'm into anything that moves me and is GOOD! Fusion, jazz, funk, latin, old skool soul, blues, Beethoven, whatever! Current flavour of the month musically though has got to be Arthur Verocai (wonderful Brazilian fusion artist) - now that really IS my thang - strings, horns, groove, rich harmony....aaaahh!
Music isn't the be-all and end-all (although it's partly what gets me out of bed in the morning!). I also love all things natural and healthy (like growing my own veg, haha!) and believe you get back what you give in this life....so RESPECT!

My Inspirations
I dig these guys...

Sax players: Ronnie Laws, Grover Washington, Wilton Felder, Wayne Shorter, Stanley Turrentine, Sanborn, Tom Scott, Art Porter, Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Ernie Watts, Eric Marienthal, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum, Maceo Parker. I get most of my inspiration though from the old-school jazzers: Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (very under-celebrated in my opinion!), Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Jackie McLean, Lou Donaldson, Houston Person, Johnny Hodges, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Lester Young. I also love the early "honkers" - King Curtis, Junior Walker, Lee Allen, Big Jay McNeely, Arnett Cobb.

Other: Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius (my ideal man....*sigh*), Joe Zawinul & Weather Report, Rippingtons, Yellowjackets, Steps Ahead, Bob James, Dave Grusin, Larry Carlton, Mike Stern, Joe Sample/The Crusaders, Chick Corea/Return to Forever, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Azymuth, Steely Dan/Donald Fagen, Average White Band, George Duke.

More commercial stuff (too much to mention!): producers Masters At Work, David Morales and Lil Louie Vega; Brazilian fusion (eg Arthur Verocai - wow!) and modern salsa artists like Ruben Blades; numerous soul singers, especially the ladies (eg Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills). 70s American funk/soul: The Bar-Kays, Brothers Johnson, Isley Brothers, Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes, Bobby Womack, Johnny Guitar Watson, Jones Sisters, Ohio Players, The O'Jays, Stevie Wonder, etc. Other more obscure groups such as Clan Greco, the Reg Project and a few Arabic singers (Amr Diab, Elissa, Samo Zain). Also some rockin' out guitarists such as Santana, Robben Ford, Joe Satriani. I've come a long way since my punk and new wave roots!

Everything else: eastern philosophy, the earth spirit, the Dalai Lama, Che Guevera, Picasso, kids, animals, friends, family, comedy and humour: Monty Python, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Woody Allen, Billy Wilder, Mel Brooks, Jack Lemmon, Little Britain, Russell Brand, Carry On films, cheesy 70s sitcoms, Spinal Tap, spoof films, George A Romero zombie movies :-), Tarantino, Scorsese, Spielberg, Kubrick, De Niro, Keitel, Pacino, Samuel L Jackson, Pam Grier, slushy animal films (Born Free, Lassie etc)....er, I think I'll stop there.:
