Influences: As a guitarist I keep getting asked what guitar players I like and have influenced me.
After a gig I am not really in a position to remember my own name let alone my influences, so in no particular order the following guitar players and musicians have all had a huge bearing on my music, the influence being emotional more than technical, tho you will spot little unconciously nicked ideas, everything I hear has an influence but here are some of my favourite guitar players, so if I feel un-inclined to be able to talk after a gig about who I like, I will send you here!!:
Koss, obviously, nothing to say here, tone tone, emotion, anguish, anger, beauty : Adrian Belew, poetic, imaginative and marvelously original, emotional playing; Bill Nelson, just beautiful guitar playing whenever he plays, love the sunburst finish album a lot tho; Allan Holdsworth, again it's the emotion of his playing that I love so much, an old friend years ago once blasted out that Holdsworth simply "plays as fast as he can"....I can't believe how insensitive people are, Holdsworth is hugely emotional as a player...the early stuff is my fave, Bruford, Metal Fatigue, Road Games, UK etc etc, Joni Mitchell, a poet, lovely songs, great guitar playing - : Michael Landau, love his aggressive wild guitar playing on those Joni Mitchell albums, Larry Carlton, - love his playing on Hejira and other things.......: Andrew Latimer, a big influence on me in the early years, long sustaining notes, melodic playing and that quintessential English feel that early Camel with Pete Bardens had: Dave Gilmour, a massive influence, just the feel the guy has, simplicity and emotion, an exciting sensational player.... : Gary Moore, a big influence in my early years, Back on the Streets, Black Rose, G Force, Colloseum 2, etc etc, ; Steve Hackett, brilliant writer and player, love his 12 string, nylon and electric playing..great Roland guitar synth stuff...very original player, very good writer, the dream and the imagination play a large role, ; Pat Thrall, on the Automatic Man album, lovely phased funky guitar, great leads, lots of effects and lots of vibe, ; Robert Fripp, especially with King Crimson in the lineup with Adrian Belew ; Carlos Santana, just very beautiful, Abraxas I love ; George Harrison - yes, George, great writer and I love his tones on Revolver and the White Album particularly, actually anything by George is good by me, ; Alex Lifeson, influenced me a lot in the 80's...started with 2112, then hemispheres, permanent waves, the first Rush album , lots of them, strangely I don't listen to Rush very much now ; Scott Goreham, a huge influence on me in teens, love his whole style - great rhythms, beautiful leads, great all round rock player, he tells a great story as well....: Clapton with cream, you know sunshine of your love etc, was in my system as a kid, : Anthony Phillips, beautiful sweet playing on Geese and the Ghost : Micheal Schenker, a big influence when I was a very young player, MSG, into the arena, etc etc : Francis Dunnery, he of It Bites, melodic aggressive player, good acoustic player now , his solo stuff is great...- : Peter Green - I love his tone and his emotional playing, a very honest and earnest player, bags of feel and talent, a very sensitive player....: Chuck Berry, those huge hands have an impact on that beautiful fat guitar tone, saw him at The Jazz Cafe, he played old Fender heads through 2x15 cabs and sounded way huge, forgot where the chords were but has charisma and humour in spades, he is truly a legend, I am so glad I got to see him live and up close in a small venue : Robben Ford, definitely share a feel style with Robben at times, not a massive collector of his stuff but love his touch, : Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield, both influenced me majorly as I grew up : Frank Zappa, love the Sheik Yerbouti album particularly, the guitar solos are amazing, Yo Mama - one of the most passionate guitar solos of all time, just beaut! ; Hendrix, obviously influenced every player on Earth, very beautiful player, ; Hendrix, deep deep guitarist - ; Geordie from Killing Joke. I love his playing on OUTSIDE THE GATE...what an album...; Steve Lukather , with Toto
is that enough...I can carry on, if required.....LOL
