PERFORMER
As a solo pianist, Richard Kahn has been booked in most of the live public venues in Los Angeles.
He has performed for the Emperor of Japan, the Sultan of Brunei, the Prime Minister of Israel, the President of the Philippines, the Prime Minister of Romania, as well as countless officials of the United States government.
He has entertained at the homes and affairs of hundreds of film and television industry figures, as well as significant contributors in the worlds of art, music, theater, dance and sports.
Richard Kahn and his trios and quartets have been featured at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, the Placido Domingo "Operalia" Awards, the Robert Mondavi Wine Festival, the Collins School of Hospitality Management Harvest Auction, the Los Angeles Times "Make A Wish" Foundation, and a myriad of corporate and private events.
ARRANGER and COMPOSER
Richard Kahn arranges all of his piano pieces. In the past, he has arranged music for musical theater, vocal jazz choir, as well as many small and large jazz ensembles. In addition, he composes in acoustic and electronic media. Many of his songs, compositions and arrangements are available through Concourse Music.
EDUCATOR
Richard Kahn joined the Music faculty at Los Angeles Valley College in Fall 2000, and currently is a tenured instructor in Commercial Music Harmony, Filmscoring and Arranging, Computer Music Notation, Computer Music Technology, The Business of Music, and Piano. Professor Kahn, along with fellow professor Michael Julian, maintain a vibrant Commercial Music program at Los Angeles Valley College, located in Valley Glen, California. Recently, they were recognized with a District Award nomination for Excellence in Workforce Development, in the category of Innovative Integration of Academic and Technical Skills.
Professor Kahn served on the faculty of the California State University at Los Angeles from 1992 to 2000. While there, he participated in the curriculum development of what would become the first Masters Degree in Commercial Music.
Professor Kahn holds a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance from Washburn University, a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies and Arranging from California State University at Los Angeles, with post-graduate studies at the University of North Texas in Jazz Performance, Arranging and Music Technology. While at UNT, he studied with jazz educators Dan Haerle, Rich Matteson, Jack Peterson, Paris Rutherford, and Neil Slater.
Professor Kahn lives with his family in West Los Angeles and continues to perform, record, and compose.
