Q Will likes to keep his primary instruments in the studio secretive and tries to avoid samples as much as possible. He prefers to have studio musicians re-play pieces of music he wants to use, because it allows him more flexibility to change the pieces in rhythm and tempo. When he does sample older records -usually for vocals- he tends to blend the samples with live guitars, bass, synthesizers, and jazz flutes, creating a soundscape where it often becomes difficult to tell where the sample ends and the original music begins. Q Will's blend of hard rap beats combined with synthesizers and soul samples is known as "Anthemic".
Q is an student of the game. He studies piano, piano riffs and music theory formally, and that a major goal is to accumulate enough musical theory to do movie scores. While Q Will's tracks remain drum based and synthesizers remain an important part of his sound, in recent years his music has become more orchestral, sparse and featured more classical instruments such as piano and strings.
Not only does Q Will "create the beat", be it through the use of a drum machine, keyboards, or even simply choosing samples and looping them, he also controls recording sessions, guides performers, and supervises the recording, mixing and mastering processes. Beatmakers make beats. Q Will produces tracks.
