A US-born Brazilian DJ, Leo Azevedo has never lived in a city for more than five consecutive years, making him able to easily adapt to changing surroundings. Born in New York, he soon moved to Brasil where he found his home, and most of his strong childhood friendships, in Rio de Janeiro. It was there, amidst the beaches, the fun and the sun, that his passion for music matured. At the time, in the early 1990's, the biggest musical import to Brasil was European dance music which was exploding in the clubs. It was those cheesy (but so good!) vocals, thumping beats and bright melodies that captured his attention and hasn't let go since.
He soon started making mix tapes and playing them at all his friend's birthday parties, including his own. Those mix tapes are still laying around somewhere...
In the late 1990's, along with the commercial explosion of electronic music in the United States, Leo began digging deeper into the cultural realm of the different sub-genres of dance music. It was at that time, while attending film school in New York that his friend and long-time house-music DJ, Nat Whelton (AKA Nathaniel Jay), handed down to him an old mixer. Leo scrounged up enough money to purchase a couple of dirt-cheap CD players and his burgeoning career as a DJ was born.
Initially catering to the top 40's, hip-hop and 80's tastes, he then honed his craft and found his home with house music. After many parties, whether at a friend's duplex, a Beverly Hills pool party, or at a little Lower East Side club in New York, Leo elevated his skills and has since become a talent to be reckoned with. He currently specializes in vocal, progressive and electro house.
He's already held a residency poolside at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, has hosted his own room at the now-legendary Spundae party in Los Angeles, has played numerous times for EM Sundays both at the Hollywood Canteen and at Joseph’s, has shown his talents at San Diego's Heat Supper Club, has ventured down to Rosarito, Mexico, for an incredible party at the Maya, and has banged the floor at Avalon in the heart of Hollywood!
Leo recently brought to a close a 1+-year Saturday night residency in Hollywood at Shag (the only boutique house-music club in Hollywood) where he could be found lifting the crowd as he himself danced in the booth with all the energy in the world. He was accompanied by his DJ'ing partner Alex G, also a Brazilian export.
Partnering with long-time friend DJ-producer Matt Cerf (Armada) under the moniker Midknights, Matt & Leo have created their first groovy electro track entitled "Good Talkin'". It has been released worldwide on a compilation CD by Michael Badal & Zya called "Jigsaw Puzzles" and also as a single, both under the Jigsaw Recordings label.
