The Sunburys are a band of craft and character, a svelte, energetic soul-rock three-piece from Brisbane.
As their name (referencing the legendary music festival) may suggest, The Sunburys sound evokes oldschool soul rock influences - from 40 years of British rock, American legends (Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Wilco) to great Australian songwriters like Tim Rogers, Paul Kelly, and Stevie Wright. Those who miss the heyday of You Am I will find much to love here.
Deft songsmiths and gutsy performers, The Sunburys rank substance over style and integrity over celebrity. Their freshness lies in their frank, meaningful stories and impossibly catchy tunes, and an uncommonly honest sense of homage to the depth of rock culture.
This no-nonsense attitude is evident on the band’s straight-shooting debut album, ‘Here Comes the Sunburys’, which exudes taut, emotive musicianship, considered but unpretentious songwriting and spirited, sweaty performances.
Out in July 2009 through Handsome Devil / MGM, ‘Here Comes the Sunburys’ was warmly received by the street press:
“…A taut and powerful debut…. This is impressive.†– TOM Magazine.
“A smooth, infectious, intelligent and engaging rock record in the vein of You Am I’s laconic vitriol and Australian soul…. One simply couldn’t ask for a more finely constructed or intelligently balanced debut album.†– Time Off (4.5/5 stars).
The album has also enjoyed a lot of love from community radio (including album of the week featuring on 3D Radio and good support from 3RRR, FBi and 4ZZZ).
Radio focus tracks ‘Today’, ‘Rosalina’, ‘Soul Singer’, ‘Borderline’ and ‘Turn Off the Radio’ as well as some of the other album tracks have received an airing. ABC Local Radio has been an enthusiastic supporter, spinning ‘Soul Singer’ and ‘Borderline’ as well as featuring an acoustic live-to-air performance as part of the national launch of digital radio.
The band features Anthony Dettori (guitar, vocals), Scott Lapthorne (drums, percussion), Andrew O’Sullivan (bass, backing vocals), and the occasional celebrity import.
The Sunburys’ second album ‘Swings & Roundabouts’ will be released later this year.
