Sounds Like:JIMMY CLIFF James Chambers, 4/1/48 ( St Catherine, JA )Before Bob Marley burst onto the international scene in the mid-1970s, the term "reggae" meant just one thing to many people-Jimmy Cliff . Composer and performer of some of the genre's biggest hits during the early 1970s and star of the midnight theater classic The Harder They Come, he was also, for anybody interested in delving deep into the music's history, one of the most consistent names on both the Jamaican and British scenes since the early 1960s. An accomplished child performer (he once appeared before 7,000 people at a county fair, performing Fats Domino's "Be My Guest"), Cliff moved to Kingston from St Catherine at the age of 14,intent only on carving himself a career in music - he adopted the surname Cliff because it implied the heights he aspired to. Pioneering producer Count Boysie was first to sense his potential, but "Daisy Got Me Crazy" went nowhere,a fate which also attended the Sir Cavalier produced "I'm Sorry". Derrick Morgan then entered the scene, introducing the boy to producer Leslie Kong and, in late 1962, Cliff's next single, "Hurricane Hattie", became a major hit almost precisely one year after the storm af the same name ravaged the Caribbean. Island Record chief Chris Blackwell was another of Cliff's early admirers, releasing a constant stream of his singles in the UK throughout the 1960s, initially aimed towards the West Indian community alon but, increasingly, with an eye towards a wider market as well. Island label issues included songs which remain the crown jewels in any modern ska collection - "Miss Jamaica", "Since Lately"(1962), "My lucky Day", "King of Kings", "Miss Universe", "The Prodigal","The Man", "You are never too old"(1963), "One Eyed Jacks", "Call on Me" and "Pride and Passion" on 1964. Finally, Blackwell persuaded Cliff to relocate to the UK on a permanent basis. Cliff was no stranger to attempts to export Jamaica's music. In August, 1964, he joined Byron Lee and Prince Buster among Jamaica's cultural representatives at New York World's Fair;in 1965 he enjoyed a residency at the Bus Palladium in Paris; all the while maintaining a stream of quality singles. By 1967, Island Records' own emphasis had moved away from Caribbean music, and the label was now actively courting the rock underground. Cliff was one of the mere handful of Jamaican artists who remained on the roster, clearly with an eye towards the then burgeoning singer-song writer market. Whit Cliff focussing his own writing accordingly, "Aim and Ambition", "Give and Take", "I got a feeling", "Hard road to travel", "That's the Way ok Life Goes"(1967),"Set Me Free", "Here I Come" and International Song Festival winner "Waterfall"(1968) all garnered increasing attention from this new target audience, both in their own right and via Cliff's appearances on Island samplers of the day, rubbing shoulders with such giants of underground rock as Mott The Hoople, Jethro Tull and King Crimson. However, he was not to remain in the UK for long. In 1968...............[to be continued]
