Release: October 27, 2008.
Out All Night is the debut album from the unique Scottish act, Findlay Napier and The Bar Room Mountaineers.Hailing from a “folk†background seems to make it easy to pigeonhole most bands, but certainly not this one.
The band comprises Findlay Napier on vocals and guitar, Douglas Millar ..boards, backing vocals, and assorted samples, Paul Jennings on cajon, assorted percussion and backing vocals, and Gillian Frame on violin and backing vocals. This instrumentation makes them a must see live band, filled with energy and vibrancy. Somewhat unusually, Out All Night (produced by the multi-talented Angus Lyon) has captured this energy perfectly. As one prominent Scottish journalist recently commented after seeing the band:“They are giving birth to a new genre: Scottish Americanaâ€Out All Night is steeped in a very rich and diverse musical tradition, drawing on many influences from many corners of the world, giving the album true, global crossover potential. The band draws on a wide range of musical influences including bluegrass, country, funk and folk, with the occasional bit of punk thrown in for good measure. If you were to think, Loudon Wainwright’s unparalleled story telling, meets the tightness of Nickel Creek, with a distinctive Scottish twist, you would be getting warm! The collection of songs on the album comes from a very unique (and fruitful) song writing partnership between the band’s front man and guitar player, and Watercolour Music owner Nick Turner (who also happens to be the husband of the multi-talented broadcaster/performer Mary Ann Kennedy) and the partnership has spawned a particularly unique set of songs, driven by some succinct and true to life story-telling.(DR, August 2008.)
