Howard Tonkin is currently recording an album of electronic pop, with the working title of Personal Apocalypse. Tonkin has created a unique sound, blending catchy pop hooks with futuristic loop based electronic music, that defies categorization. Tonkin’s powerful male vocals are reminiscent of the new wave/new romantic British invasion of the 1980’s.
Tonkin’s song writing is refreshing departure from the typical themes of love and loss, exploring themes of social expectation and self realization. The listener is taken on a musical journey of self exploration, both introspectively and externally.
The songs are sophisticated and smooth, though simultaneously raw and honest. The material is deeply personal, but is written in a way that everyone can relate to. The lyrics are rich with metaphor and can be applied personally, socially and politically. Tonkin manages to tell a cautionary story through music, that is not at all preachy, but an honest reflection of his rich life experience.
Howard Tonkin was born in Melbourne, Australia. With a strong background in fine art and drama he moved to New York. Tonkin studied singing under the guidance of acclaimed voice coach, Mercedes Hall; he also studied audio engineering at Manhattan’s new school. Living in the East Village and being a part of the underground club scene, Tonkin drew influence and developed contacts that led to numerous performances at NY clubs including the legendary Roxy, Club Life, Duplex, Cabaret, just to name a few. Tonkin received rave reviews and was compared to Frank Sinatra and George Michael.
Tonkin pursued various recording projects through the 90’s and recorded his first album with producer Warren Rigg. In 1999 Tonkin was an associate producer and director of music for CNBC’s ‘The Great Game’, the history of Wall Street.
Tonkin moved to Miami in 2000 and pursued both film and recording projects. In 2004 Tonkin played the lead role, in the short film ‘Product Placement’. The film won several awards world wide, including best actor at the International Film Festival in Granada, Spain, 2004. The film was also well received at both the Tribeca and Toronto film festivals. Tonkin has also played the voices of several animated film characters.
