About Me
2008 is an exciting year for Trophy Wife. They started the year working on thier debut album and are now plotting the first steps of international success, hopfully starting with Germany. The music we write is largely a product of having been kicked around by life in general and beaten up by people specifically. Homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, finding a friend dead on the floor, getting mugged - none of these appear in the words written, but the trouble they created has given us a desire to get to the emotional heart of things; with themes that tend to revolve around the bad things people do to each other when (or because) they think they’re in love.Trophy Wife are made up of Ned (Guitars/vocals) ‘Z’ (Vocals/drum) and their newest member Mike (Bass/drum/vocals)Ned: I am the International Man of Misery. I discovered my voice aged 6, singing ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ solo during a nativity play, and have been irritating people with it ever since. Whilst studying for a Performing Arts BTEC in 1997 I met one of the kindest people in the world. He was playing ‘Rape me’ by Nirvana on an acoustic guitar. I started singing along. Two weeks later I bought a guitar myself. I never took lessons, but we started writing. He being much better than I, my playing improved massively, and before too long people (listening to recordings we made) were asking just where we found the 5 guitarists that appeared to be playing the song. We were that good! It all ended badly in Swindon, some years later, as so many things do. I carried on writing, playing and living. I’m not sure which fuelled the other, but the result has often been tunes that capture a particular feeling or mindset - often sarcastic and a bit cross. Well, that is how I feel more often than not. I took on the mantle of ‘Trophy Wife’ sometime in 2006. It’s not exactly Rock and/or Roll, but I like it. So, anyway; I guess it was inevitable that I hook up with a great singer. It was a hot August afternoon. Suddenly I grew these huge eyebrows like you see on Moths in the summer. I got this scent. Powerful it was, and I had to follow. Well, you know how it is. Two weeks later I was still following the moon, and then – disaster! I spent the next 3 days in a lampshade in someone’s front room! I freed myself using a combination of wit and unclarified butter and sooner or later, by some means or other, I found her, a little Celtic hippie from the middle of nowhere. I’ve had to learn bloody German just to understand half the things she says. She’s a redhead. Run! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!! And so here we are...Classically trained ‘Z’ previously sang with the Bristol based band Neverwinter who went their separate ways in early 2007. ‘Z’ joined forces with Ned in July 2007 and together they brought Trophy Wife to life just in time for their first gig a month later.Mike was found wandering aimlessly around the gloucestershire countryside, apparently looking for a lost cheese & onion sandwich. It took but a short while and a spontaneous jam session in a tipi to establish that he could provide Trophy Wife with the "secret ingredient" that would complete their sound and transform this already formidable duo in to a monster contrapuntal trio that may, one day, conquer the known universe!!!
Mikes' folk roots are well established, having spent his early years being dragged around the country's public houses and folk festivals by a troop of stick wielding, ale quaffing morris dancers and being lulled to sleep of an evening by the rustic tones of his uncles fiddle playing. He was encouraged from a young age by his family to play some sort of musical instrument and, finally settling on guitar at the age of eight, has been tormenting neighbours and family members from there on!
