About Me
The Rude Mechanicals stand for Radical Remodernism.
A Rude Mechanical is someone who loves art and makes art but must support themselves through means other than art. We are Rude Mechanicals striving to become artists; the art we make is a reflection of the world striving to be a better world.
Most people will not be able to support themselves through their art. That's why Rude Mechanicals say: "Don't quit your day job". Instead, keep your day job; steal supplies from your industry and use them in your work or make art that references your job or working conditions.
We believe in:
unity, not autonomy
anger, not irony
dialogue, not monologue
principles, not morals
democracy, not capitalism
humanism, not nihilism

We make revolutionary mini-zines and comic mini-zines and revolutionary mini-comics and, sometimes, mini-revolutions comically.

COMIC STRIKE 2007:
The funny pages have gone on a humor strike to protest the war in Iraq! Artists and writers participating in the strike are withholding their funny and, yes, slightly amusing gags and punchlines until all troops are withdrawn! No longer will policy makers be able to read the newspaper and skip to the comics page to chuckle or say “huh, I don’t get it†and forget their role in the destruction and occupation of Iraq and the deaths of Iraqis and U.S. soldiers. Now the only comics they will be able to read are the ones in “the New Yorker†and on the editorial page – yes, it will be a world without laughs for them until the U.S. leaves the Middle East.
The organizers of Comic Strike 2007 would like to thank the writers of the following comics for participating in this humor strike (many of them have been righteously striking for years – decades even!): Marmaduke, Garfield, Hi and Lois, The Born Loser, Hazel, Andy Capp, Zippy, Luann, Pickles, Blondie, Family Circus, Marvin, B.C., Flo and Friends, Dilbert, the one with the family and the pet and, oh well, you get the picture.
We would also like to thank most stand up comics and sit-com writers.
Soon, you will be able to check out Rude Mechanicals articles and information on the Art for a Democratic Society website. The website is currently under construction, but here's the address anyways just for kicks: www.a4ds.org
Art for a Democratic Society just opened an etsy store, where you can get A4DS and Rude Mechanicals buttons and zines! All proceeds support our artistic endeavors and support further publications.
