i was born Edward Estlin Cummings. but to make things easer you can call me e.e. cummings. i am a Massachusetts native born October 14, 1894 in Cambridge. i grew up in that same area during my youth and eventually attended Harvard University where i studied different languages and English. i graduated in 1916 with a M.A. in English and classical studies.
after graduation i left for France to serve as an ambulance driver in WWI. while there i was detained for almost 4 months on suspicion of treason but later was released. during that time i was inspired to write about my experiences and later it would pay off.
i finally settled in New York where i established myself as a Modernist and my writing took on a style of its own. i began using unusual punctuation as a second alphabet to make points without using words. i also enjoy using satire in my work. most of my writing is about love and nature, as well as how the world affects the individual. although i am mostly known for my literary works, i have always though of myself as a painter first and a writer second.
