When it's Cold and when it's Dark, The Freezing Moon can OBSESS you!
The Freezing Moon, written by DEAD (RIP) in '88
Everything here is so cold
Everything here is so dark
I remember it as from a dream
In the corner of this time
Diabolic Shapes float by
Out from the dark
I remember it was here I died
By following the freezing moon
It's night again, night you beautiful
I please my hunger on living humans
Night of hunger, follow it's call
Follow the freezing moon
Darkness is growing, the eternity opens
The cemetary lights up again
As in ancient times
Fallen souls, die behind my steps
by following the freezing moon
"Freezing Moon" was recorded with Dead on vocals in 1989 and was released on "Projections of a Stained Mind" a compilation disc. It was re-released on "A Tribute To The Black Emperors" a split with MORBID(Dead's previous band) in 1994 which was limited to 1,000 copies. In 1996 it was finally officially released as the single "Freezing Moon". To this day those two Dead recordings have been released countless times on many bootlegs. Years active:1988-1991 (Recorded: 1989|Released: 1997)
Occultus replaced Dead after his suicide.
He was in Mayhem for only a brief period of time. Not only did he replace Dead on vocals but he also replaced Necro Butcher on bass. This version of "Freezing Moon" is a rehearsal from 1991 released in the bootleg album "In Memorium". It has since been released on several bootleg's. Years active:1991 (Recorded: 1991/ Released: 1996)
This version contains a rehearsal recording of "Freezing Moon" taped during May 16th 1992 before recording vocals, featuring the original bass by Count Grishnack of Burzum. Also the bass lines on this version are much louder than the "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" version. Some of the riffs on this version are notably different. (Recorded: 1992/Released: 1997)
This version of "Freezing Moon" is the original recording that appears in "Life Eternal". When guitarist and founding member Euronymous was murdered, the bass lines were lowered, vocals edited and some effects were added. After the murder of Euronymous by Count Grishnackh in 1993, vocalist Attila Csihar lost all contact with the band. The only thing the vocalist had left was a tape he had made for himself with the un-edited version of five of the eight songs. In 1994 all eight songs were finally released and remixed as a tribute to Euronymous in "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" (Recorded: 1993/Released: 2009)
This verion of "Freezing Moon" was recorded with then session vocalist Attila in 1993 and was released in the album "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". Attila is an amazing vocalist who has become a great asset to Mayhem. Though he is considered inferior to Dead by many fans he was still a very good replacement with his amazing style of Black Metal vocals. Years active:(1993-1994, 2004-current). (Recorded: 1993/Released: 1994)
............................................................ .................. A tour of Euorope in 2000 resulted with the release of "European legions" and here Maniac does a superb live version of "Freezing Moon". Maniac was their longest running vocalist.Years active:(1986-1988, 1994-2004). (Recorded: 2000/Released: 2001) .
