government is moving forward quickly to begin construction of the road despite the pleas of the residents of
Shimokitazawa. The residents of Shimokitazawa need your help to stop construction of this read. Please visit
Shimokitazawa to find out for yourself what makes this neighborhood so unique and please send letters, emails and
faxes to the Tokyo government to urge the halting of construction of Route 54.
How to help
The residents of Shimokitazawa need your help. This current issue is largely unknown outside of Japan however the
issue of citizen control over urban planning is universal and connects the residents of Shimokitazawa to residents of
other threatened communities around the world. So often, the interests of the city planners are vested in large
construction projects, developers and the industries that support them, and not in the best interests of the residents
themselves. The residents of Shimokitazawa wish to have a more democratic approach to urban planning that takes
into account the needs of the areas residents.
Please visit the Save the Shimokitazawa website and sign the petition to stop construction of Route 54:
