About Me

Crescent Beach Guitar is a full service stringed instrument repair shop run by Jake de Villiers.
It is the Santa Cruz Guitar Company Authorized Repair Shop for British Columbia and a dealer for Upton Bass & Revolution Solo II bass pickups.
Jake has been a member of The Guild of American Luthiers since 2003 and is currently the violin, cello and double bass repair specialist at Long & McQuade on Terminal Avenue in Vancouver, BC.
We specialise in the setup & repair of acoustic guitars, mandolins, banjos, dobros & double basses, electric guitars & basses, and ukeleles too. Pretty much anything with strings or frets although basses seem to be becoming the house specialty.
We have a couple of new Romanian Hybrids for sale and will have a fine 1939 Kay C-1 for sale after it gets a new setup including fingerboard, bridge & strings.
We are as comfortable with new instruments as we are with vintage ones and we'll set up your inexpensive mandolin as carefully as we would a pre-war Martin.

Influences: Jake has been playing guitar since 1971 and adjusting instruments since 1972 when a well known acoustic guitar shop made his D-28 unplayable and incapable of playing in tune. They installed a dyed rosewood bridge instead of the appropriate ebony version and used toothpicks as shims to raise the saddle! They also filed the frets without polishing them, making for a very rough playing experience and were unable to accurately set the intonation. After several unsuccessful attempts to get the store to correct these deficiencies, he gave up.

This bad experience led to years of trial & error learning about how guitars worked and to a study of the art of lutherie and stringed instrument repair. Great repairmen like Bob Steinegger and Bob Brook were visited and plied with questions.

He worked with noted Canadian luthier Michael Heiden for two years and learned a lot about mandolins & guitars, including some key factors in the production of tone & volume that apply to all stringed instruments.

A well known bluegrass singer and an experienced player of acoustic & electric guitar, as well as double bass and mandolin, Jake is well qualified to diagnose an instrument's strengths and weaknesses and can recommend appropriate steps to enhance the sound and playability of your stringed instrument.
