The Mabuhay Gardens (aka The Mab, The Fab Mab, The Mabuhay) is a San Francisco nightclub located at 443 Broadway, on the Broadway strip of North Beach, an area best known for its strip clubs. Ness Aquino opened Mabuhay Gardens doors, March 22, 1972
Originally a Filipino restaurant and club owned by Ness Aquino, featured many Filipino celebrities from 1972-1976.
In 1976, Aquino agreed to have rock promoter and television producer Dirk Dirksen book punk and new wave bands there; it soon became one of the main venues for punk rock in San Francisco in the late 1970s and early 1980s (a sort of west coast CBGBs). Dirk dubbed the the Mabuhay Gardens "The Fab Mab".
In 1983 Ness gave metal promoter Tambre Bryant a chance to bring metal into the Mab, with bands like Megadeth, it soon became one of the main venues for metal bands.
Virtually every early Bay Area punk, new wave, metal and rock band performed there at one time or another, and it was an important touring stop for bands from beyond the San Francisco Bay Area. Among the bands that performed there were the Dead Kennedys, Flipper, Romeo Void, Black Flag, The Dictators, The Nuns, The Offs, The Mutants, The Avengers, The Damned, DEVO, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, D.O.A., BLONDIE, The Screamers, Minutemen, DRI, Redd Kross, JFA, Blind Illusion, Anvil Chorus, Megadeth, Metallica, EXODUS, Death Angel, Villain, Ulysses Siren, and WARNINGSF just to name a few. Comedian Whoopie Goldberg, Robin Williams, also made early appearances at the venue.
In 2007 Tambre Bryant (T&T Productions), decided to bring live punk, metal, and rock back to the Mab.
On Oct 12, 2007. T & T Productions received a mayoral proclimation by Mayor Gavin Newsom for bringing back a piece of San Francisco's history and in Ness Aquino's name declared October 12 as MABUHAY GARDENS DAY each year in San Francisco. We look forward to bringing you Mabuhay Gardens Day 2008.
Sunday Nov.11, a benefit for Ness Aquino was held at the old Mabuhay Gardens location. The last live show in the Mabuhay Gardens location presented by T & T Productions, produced by Kathy Peck and Tambre Bryant, co-sponsered by the H.E.A.R. Foundation and K.U.S.F.
