Influences: I write more classic/acoustic, but there are decidedly progressive and jazz elements to it. Let's see... The Police, Steely Dan, The Who, The Smiths, U2, The Fixx, almost anything 1980's new wave, TPOH, Billy Bragg, Joe Jackson, Pat Metheny, The Cure, The Cars, The Doobie Brothers. My real early influences were the Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, Peter Frampton, The Who, Led Zeppelin ..I could go on and on, but there is just so much amazing talent out there that it would be difficult to not be influenced by it. Even if something is 'not my style', I still learn from it.
Sounds Like:
It's kind of hard to describe...It is very original. A music critic once said that," Bruce Martin has a sound that is edgy and intense, with the emphasis on solid lyrics, and music and melodies that are tasty enough to make it work". It has appealed to a wide range of fans over the years. If I was put on the spot, I would say that my music sounds like a mix of classic rock, with some progressive mixed in. I just try to write what I feel without any B.S., because I want it to mean something real to everyone. I believe that once you strip all the studio tricks and other instruments away, a song has to be able to stand on its' own. I can play every song that I write with just one guitar and the lead vocal line. That is where I am coming from. This approach has always made sense and has worked for me. Of course, once we add all the other stuff back in, I still want to provide an awesome and relevant tune which hopefully will stick with the listener.
