"Mannahâ€Nashville-based prog rock group Mannah is a seamless embodiment of the distinct, yet similarly melodic souls of its four members, Jonathan Spencer, lead vocals, Kaelin Tauxe, guitar, vocals, Adam Erickson, bass, and John Toomey, drums. Each of these men suppresses a secret, contented rage – respective furies that they liberate en masse on stage.
Spencer’s profound vocals and earnest delivery capture the audience’s attention first, evoking impressions of a Rush influence with the Geddy Lee quality in his voice. Spencer is capable of several astoundingly strident octaves, constantly striving for higher, shriller pitches, as energy pulses through his sinewy frame. However, as Spencer’s echoes diminish, one realizes he has momentarily disappeared, relinquishing the stage temporarily to his band mates. Tauxe and Erickson move forward and face each other, generating a palpable tension between them and dueling it out a little before stepping away to focus on their increasingly complicated solos.
Back on their own sides of the stage, Tauxe and Erickson become themselves again. Erickson’s easygoing personality is evident in the way he grooves to his bass rhythms, using a series of slaps and plucks and often playing with both hands up on the neck of his bass as well. Tauxe, on the other hand, serves as a stoic and intense presence, modestly bending over his guitar as his fingers twitch effortlessly across the frets with alarming speed and flawless dexterity.
Then there’s Toomey, who periodically extends his arms up, drawing the audience’s gaze back to center stage, the quick flicks of his wrists in the air like lightning striking each time, the brisk twirls of his drumsticks exemplifying the precision and accuracy with which he plays every note, always driving at a complex and rampant cadence. Toomey punctuates his impeccable and rapid strokes with a rumbling double bass, filling out the lower end of Mannah’s vast spectrum of pitches.
With this collective wealth of musical capability, Mannah can stake a claim in the realm of progressive rock, where staggering and inexhaustible shredding guitar solos and soaring peals of vocal harmonies are not only welcome, but practically required. Of their growing original repertoire, two songs stand out as exceptionally brilliant. “On My Own†is one of Mannah’s more poetic tunes, but its lyrics are universally significant and its melody immediately accessible. “In Health†is the epitome of prog, radio-worthy, and one of the most rock-infused love songs in recent history.
Mannah recently released their debut EP, samples of which are available on their MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/mannahband.
