EX PATRIOTS

About Me

The Ex Patriots are two young American musicians, Christian ‘innaspace’ Gibson (vocals, keys, and percussion) and William ‘hamburgler’ Hasselberger (vocals, bass, and guitars). They met and became friends while in high school abroad in Portugal. Sharing an appreciation for an eclectic variety of musical styles—from hip-hop to jazz and electro—the two clicked as artists almost immediately. While in Portugal, Christian and William have worked on various projects such as the experimental afro-beat project The Collective, the electro-rock band Buccimazza, the indie hip-hop project The Billy Crystal Method (featuring Portuguese rap sensation Biru and LA Underground hip hop legend Existereo). In 2002, Christian moved to Liverpool to pursue a four-year degree in sound technology at the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts. While in the UK, Christian, as Innaspace, released an experimental hip-hop album called ‘The New Color’. After completing his BA with Honors, Christian returned to California where he is currently producing albums for artists of diverse styles. William (‘hamburgler’) Hasselberger moved in 2001 to Miami and then to Scotland to work on music and earn his BA with Honors in Philosophy. During this time William produced music for various artists such as The Whyknows, Existereo, and Nastio, and soundtracks for independent films. William is currently a graduate instructor working on his PhD in the Philosophy of Art from the University of Virginia. In their respective projects, Christian and William have shared stages in different countries with acts such as Sofa Surfers (Schmede Festival, Austria, 2005), Cypress Hill and Manu Chao (Sudoeste Festival, Portugal, 2007), Daedalus and Abstract-Rude (Paris, 2005). Now that both are living in the United States they’re working together again as The Ex Patriots. Their debut album ‘the Long Weekend’ was recorded over three long sessions in California and Virginia. The album deals with the individual’s search for existential and political identity by chronicling the journeys of a solitary, introspective traveler abroad. The album draws upon diverse genres like folk, hip-hop, and electronica, in creating a varied, and continuously developing cinematic atmosphere. The Ex Patriots are now at work on a new genre-bending surreal album. The new as of yet untitled album is currently in the works and focuses on painting surrealist images in the listeners mind.
