James Jackson, also known as Young Soulja, has something that no other teenage rapper has, an unhumanlike drive for music. If you ask him to write a song, he will write 5 and tell you to pick the song you like best. He also has versatility. He can make commercial club/dance songs to get the party started, or deliver clever lyrics and hard-hitting punchlines. Soulja has also done something that's extremely hard for a teenager to do on his own, make a name for himself without a manager.
With over 450,000 plays on myspace and having EVERY song (15 or more songs) on his soundclick page reach the top 100, most reaching top 50 and even top 10 out of over 1,300,000 hip hop songs, he has received a huge fan base! "I've had so many people tell me I wont make it, even my own family, but I got more fans than people that doubt me. As long as my mom supports me, I'm good."
Being born in Detroit, Michigan and raised without a father figure, he's went through stages in his life where he's messed up in school and made bad choices. "Not having a father doesn't affect me, because my mom is my mom and dad in my eyes. It just made me realize that I'd never end up like my dad. I can do bigger and better things than he's ever done without his help." Soulja says. Soulja's father was a bass player for The Temptations when they first started out. When The Temptations split apart the first time, Soulja's father left for good.
Young Soulja, being raised in Kentucky, hasn't really had a steady manager that has really helped him. "I did this ALL by myspace. My mom dished out a lot of money for me though, but as far as promotion goes, I've spent days and days at a time promoting." Soulja explains.
"Kentucky isn't the best place to start your music career." He laughs. "I think..wait, I KNOW 2009 is definitely my year to shine. I got a good feeling about this."
