Meet I-Murder
As an independant musician, makin your own music in your own time in your own style is what you are about.
You can work with the mainstream to pay your bills but the ultimate pay-off is establishing your own label independantly.
Although, the money may not come right away, the soul benefits are immediate and in my opinion alot more valuable.
As long as your focused and work hard, the money will come as well. Meet I-Murder.
His first taste of Hip Hop came in 1988. At 8 years old the cassette
player was rollin tapes from the likes of NWA, 2 Live Crew, Geto Boyz,
Public Enemy and Naughty By Nature. It was only a few years later that
I Murder began creating his own Rap tracks the way it was meant to be
done. The capture of soul with a Boombox and cassette tapes. At ten
years old the power of hip hop shined through this white boy from
Flint, Michigan only to carry him to creating an influential form of
music.
As a young teen, I Murder began making music with bands from around his
way with a style all their own. With such a diverse musical
background as Motown, RnB, Classic Rock, Hip Hop and Rock, he displayed
a unique taste. With this amount of fuel, displaying no limits to
musical "genres" is inevitable.
"I believe I bring something different to the table for Hip Hop," says
the 27 year old MC, "obviously being a white emcee, there is a
stereotype already established so its harder to make a mark."
In my opinion this statement is very true. It's painfully obvious what
is going on in not only Hip Hop today, but in most of mainstream music,
period. To quote the Nasty Nostradamus
"Its becoming unbearable, makin hits is easy
put a famous bitch on a hook there you go with a platinum cd"
Music today has a very processed-meat taste to it. I Murder is no
fast-food chain. His heart and soul bleed through originality and
artistry in everything he serves up which is a blend of cheesy pop,
hardcore street beef, and conscious lyrics as a fine champagne
dressing.
"I could sit and make every song about my past-about being grimey,
being shot at, etc, but to me its played out.." It has been that you
can take the kid out the streets but you can't take the streets out the
kid. This lifestyle isn't something that this artists wants to flaunt.
Sure, its the popular thing to do, but its always going to be inside of
him. It seems as though violence and Hip Hop are like peas and carrots
but as a father, its important to set the example and break that
seemingly eternal connection down for his son's sake. If not only for a
song or two.
"I feel that if your given a voice...you need to say somethin. Not just
talk about a life that others will never understand like your expensive
car, rims and your VIP status. Where I come from that don't exist. I'm
outspoken and very aware of the fake side of Hip Hop, the 'character'
side of selling records, " states the down to earth Michigan-bred
lyricist "There's alotta guys in the game who should be up for Oscars,
not Grammy s"

"Success to me is really determined when you achieve your goals you set out to reach.
Obviously money plays apart of it , it has to , when you got bills and kids etc ,you gotta do what you can to get to that
point where you can live in a comfort zone.Me personally I could care less about fame , thats secondary
living comfortably and makin sure those who helped me get here are taken care of is all apart of that vision.
When you come from the dirt you wanna get to the sidewalk , and Im just like any other rags to riches story ,
when you sleep in cars , hotels , have your possessions thrown to the curb that all stays with you - you dont forget it
it makes you work for it harder."
"Respect is somethin you earn , it comes in time so as I come up hopefully I gain respect from those who I respect if not
cool , I got no beef wit anyone until I feel disrespected , just like anyone else."
Anything else you'd like to say the readers, I-Murder?
"Id like to 1st tell anyone who s been apart of my come up from day one from Flinttown to the net to wherever
that it means alot to me and I appreciate the support an we in this together we gon get it .
The underground is full of talent , its everywhere and everybody tryin to do the same thing so to me I feel we all
in that same boat right now . Id tell anyone comin up to never stop that hustle . no matter what negativity is in your way
its up to you to knock down any obstacle's - always step ya game up and listen to criticism.
People sometimes forget Im also a producer , thats how you pay the bills so I know how crucial it can be in the underground
to get beats so anyone lookin out for that hit me up as always [email protected]
There you have it. The words of a true artist. I feel there alot of artists alive today that represent that realness
that I-Murder conveys through his music. I feel it is important to preserve and support this type of music.
Its not just hip-hop. I can see this quality in several local bands around my way.
Its Rock, Country, RnB, Jazz, Techno and much more that this relates to.
Support your local artists that really deserve it. There is nothing wrong with
the "flavor of the month" music of the mainstream but the flooding of
the game with cookie cutter music is what kills the true spirit of
music. I know ya feel me knockin! Let me in, already!
