Hot Swingin' Acoustic Gyspy Jazz
"Hot Club of Phoenix: This is a great power trio in the tradition of Moreno Winterstein, Raphael Fays, or the Rosenberg Trio. Chuck Hulihan was power-hunkered over his Shelley Park guitar, developing unique and personal solo ideas into well-crafted songs with the accompaniment of a solid, pumping rhythm section. He is the ‘71 SuperBee Mopar-powered muscle car of Gypsy jazz guitar. They were a bottomless well of energy and ideas, keeping the listeners engaged from first note to last. And we REALLY liked Chuck’s hat."
-Just Jazz Guitar Magazine, February 2008
"...Hot Club Phoenix plays a lively, authentic set of 'gypsy jazz' that traces its lineage straight back to Django Reinhardt. Django's tunes are prominent in the set but are balanced by swinging compositions from other performers in this tradition. And when I say swinging, I mean SWINGING. Hot Club Phoenix even makes a minor ballad sound joyous and full of life.
Audience members unfamiliar with Django and his legacy were treated to a succint bio/history followed by a set of 3 Django tunes. A Highlight was the extended intro and cadenza on Django's classic "Nuages" - we were treated to easily the best version of this tune I've ever heard. Hot Club Phoenix artfully achieves a music of great virtuosity and depth - to which you can still tap your foot and feel happy!"
