Tru Stone

About Me

Tru Stone is a group made up of several artists, both male and female. The artists are headed by Lamar “Gooch” Robinson, a group member and rapper since 1993. Each artist has a distinctive flair that promises to strike the industry with new and fresh talent unseen in the hip hop world. Each artist has his own character through their appearance and rap style. Their talents and lyrics not only flows in a harmonious fashion, but their contents are so genuine and authentic that they reach into the heart of the listener bring them into the artist’s state of mind.
In a short span of time, the group has gone from virtual unknowns to becoming one of Michigan’s most active and talked about groups. Their recipe for success? Start with a very aggressive and energetic stage presentation. Stir in distinctive styles, true to life tales, banging tracks, contagious hooks and spicy hot lyrics. Add courage and dedication from all the members and let simmer. The result: Tru Stone.
In 2002, with their hot new single “What you talking bout?” from their debut album, “Trust One”, Tru Stone performed continuously entertaining thousands. The album, which sold with a full length video, caused fans to rush to purchase the CD even before it was released. Another hot track, “Step Up” which features rap veteran MC Breed, showed the industry Tru Stone means business. Sales rose to nearly 10,000 copies in short order. With the help of local club DJ’s and loyal fans who embraced Tru Stone, the group went from performing in small local clubs to performing at festivals and concert halls across the Midwest.
With in house promotions and independent outsourcing, Tru Stone hit the streets hard. Flyers, posters, television and radio advertising turned their camp in the right direction. Tru Stone has been spreading the word on all fronts; from conducting numerous interviews on WJLB-FM 98, Detroit Clear Channel and WDTH- FM 105.9 Detroit Radio One to being featured in Murder Dog and other hip hop magazines. Their music has been played numerous times on the air, including Canada. They’ve paid special attention to he college crowd by focusing in those areas and playing in these locals.
One of the strongest attributes of Tru Stone is their ability to excite and hype up a crowd with heavy hitting tracks from producers such as prominent Detroit DJ and recording artist Jewels. Their fan base has been loyal and growing by the day. When the group held their Tru Stone CD and video listening/viewing party at Marilyn’s on Monroe, in Detroit, hundreds of people packed the club. Radio personality, the Bushman of WJLB, featured in the movie “8 Mile”, hosted the event. The Bushman was shocked to see a full to capacity crowd chanting the Tru Stone hooks and anthems all evening; proving yet again the dedication and devotion of Tru Stone’s fans.
The next CD, Stay Tru, showcased the group’s different flavors making it a sure shot selling over 10,000 units. Throughout the creation of this CD, listeners were so amazed by their work that request for the CD began immediately. Tru Stone has surpassed any of its previous work with the help and dedication of Grammy Award producer, Michael Powell whose credits included production for Anita Baker and Patty Labelle as well as numerous other stars. Mike Powell brings the quality and perfection the previous albums were missing with strong dedication to bringing out the best of every artist performing before him. Matching Powell’s dedication with Tru Stone’s catchy beats put “Stay Tru” in a class by itself.
In July 2007, the group contracted with Styx River Management to represent them in promoting the group to a world wide audience. Deb Brown, their manager, brings the spice to ‘kick it up a notch’ in the media world. Represented by well known and much sought after Detroit attorney Howard Hertz, who also represents Emenim, George Clinton and numerous other stars, Deb is creating a stir for the latest release titled “2 Stones 1 Bird”; destined to be their best work yet. Working with Nick “Nickel” Williams as producer, the group was able to expand on the lessons of Powell turning out the smooth meaningful sounds Tru Stone is becoming known for. Mixed and mastered by Grammy award winning, Jonas D. Berzanskis of Silver Tortoise Sound Lab, “2 Stones 1 Bird” recently caught the attention of North Star Media, of Los Angeles, CA. Look for songs like “Hold My Own” to be featured in movies and television soon. Showing their social conscience, “Land of the Free (The Peace Song)”, features female artist “Victoria Monet’s” soulful voice. Tru Stone performed the song for an audience of nearly 1000 at a peace rally in Pontiac. So impressed by their stage presence and meaningful lyrics the audience responded with a standing ovation and nearly 300 CD single sales that night. Local television news casts covered the event.
This is only the beginning of the Tru Stone story. Stick around and be a part of the rest of the story!
