HOW DID IT START? ------------------------------------------------------------ -------- Rap Kreyol is Rap in Kreyol THE HISTORY OF KREYOL HIP HOP (RAP N RAGGA KREYOL) by DJ Mingolove ******************According to Eliacim, a radio announcer and rapper residing in Haiti, 1982 is the year that RAP KREYOL first started in Haiti because that was the year Master Dji released the first Rap Kreyuol song on radio. The song was called "VACANCES". Master Dji rap in Creole throughout the song "VACANCES" and a young lady is also featured on the track, rapping in Creole as well. ********************* In 1986, the same MASTER DJI, whose real name was Georges Lys Herard, and who was a young DJ/radio announcer, poet, singer released a rap music single, which was something very different from what the Haitians ears were used to... That single would be followed by Master Dji's full solo album entitled "POLITIK PAM". This album featured songs like "Petite Fille des Trottoirs", Tann Pou Tann", "Politik Pam" which are considered as the first Haitian rap songs... ************************************************************ ***** A few months later, a conscious Haitian group named FRERES PARENTS would released "VEYE YO", a mellow song with a good rap verse. I remember, back in elementary school, when my former classmates and I used to rap that rap part of the song: " Depi le ti konkonm tap goumen ak berejennn... Depi le gran papam, papa papam te jenn...." ************************************************************ **** Although Master Dji had released an album with several RAP songs on it and although Freres Parents's song "Veye Yo" which featured a rap verse were very popular among the teenagers and young adults, the KREYOL HIP HOP MOVEMENT didn't started until the early 90's when many youngsters in Haiti who were exposed to the American mainstream hip hop music, break dances, and Jamaican reggae music began to adopt that kind of sub-culture. ************************************************************ ***** In a few major cities in Haiti, young teenagers and young adults used to gather at some street corners, break dancing, singing in Creole over some dancehall hit songs beats from Shabba Ranks, Shaka Demus, and rapping in Creole and French over some beats from hit songs from LL Cool J, NWA, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Hammer, Dr. Dre, Ice-T, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Arrested Development. ************************************************************ ***** It wasn't long before the streets corner gathering took another level... In the early 90's, MCs would master the rap skills and around summertime and Christmas time, there would be some RAP KREYOL contests where MCs would register and showcase their skills. ************************************************************ ****** As the Jamaican Dancehall and American Hip Hop would become more widespread in Haiti, more young adults in Haiti would become more involved in writing Creole lyrics and rapping/singing them over the popular beats from dancehall artists or American rappers. ************************************************************ **** Around that same time, a new radio station called TROPIC FM has opened in Port-au-Prince, Haiti... and one of the DJ from that radio station, MASTER DJI (who had released a few years before an album of Rap and ragga ) had a very popular radio show where he would be play8ing a lot of American Hip Hop hit songs, Jamaican Dancehall hit songs, and French rap songs. ************************************************************ ***** Master Dji would later conducted some kind of talent search during his show where he would invite to his radio show some aspiring rappers in whom he saw some hope or/and skills, he would play a beat and have them rap in Creole over the beats. That would allow Master Dji to discover a few talents like Teddy Fresh, BOP and his group Tremor, Frantz Jamaican, Supa Denot, Elylrac (who was also a DJ at Tropic FM). ************************************************************ ***** With a few of the guys whose talents he had discovered during his talent search (on his radio show), Master Dui would record a mix tapes. Around summer 1992, this mix tapes came out with more than 10 songs from different artists. Teddy Fresh, who was considered as the most skilled MC/rapper at that time, had 2 successful on this tapes, Trezor (first group BOP from Masters was a member) also had 2 hit songs on that tape. Frantzy Jamaican had one hit song, Elylrac had one, and Top Adler's first group (before he joined ORS) had a hit song called "SOVE LANMOU".... ************************************************************ **** In 1993, during the Aristide coup d'etat, from nowhere came PAPA JUBE, a MC living in the United States. Papa Jube is from Croix-des-Bouquets and he is related the Wyclef Jean. Papa Jube released his first and only album to date. The album was a ragga album and it contains 2 hits (Demokrazi and Embago) and two buzz songs (Bib, Kapot). Although radio stations could barely play songs like AMBAGO or DEMOKRASI because of their strong political message, the album was a success. Copies of the album were being purcahsed like hot patties. ************************************************************ ***************** With the success of Master Dji's mixtapes throughout the whole country of Haiti, following by Papa JUBE's breakthrough with his first ragga muffin album, the pressure was on and the expectations were high. So Master Dji would pick some of the MCs from the mixxtapes to record the first real RAP KREYOL project under the name of HAITI RAP AND RAGGA. This compilation (project) that regrouped many different artists and a group (Trezor) came out at the end of 1993. This album was a MEGA success, not only in Haiti, but as well as in the French Antilles and in France. The songs "Manmzel" and "Conscience Noire" were among the MONSTER hits on that CD. ************************************************************ ****** It is important to mention that a few Konpa musicians like Mizik Mizik's Fabrice Rouzier and Keke Belizaire helped Master Dji with the recording and performances. If you look at Manmzel video, you could see Ti Fabrice and Keke playing live with the Haiti Rap N Ragga Crew. ************************************************************ ******* While the album HAITI RAP N RAGGA kept on selling like hot patties, a new crew named ORIGINAL RAP STAFF (ORS) made a major impact in the Haitian Hip Hop scene with a song called "BAGAY YO DROL". They song was a mega hit for many different reasons (the social and political message, the great skilled of the rappers...and the jab thrown Haiti Rap n Ragga by one of their former member BOP (now a member of Masters) and by Homey Money Mike in his verse. ************************************************************ ***** Before Haiti Rap n Ragga crew had a chance to answer to ORS, Master Dji became sick and his health kept on deteriorating. Months later, MASTER DJI, known as the father of RAP KREYOL (KREOL HIP HOP) Movement would pass away. He died on Saturday May 21, 1994. ************************************************************ ***** Master Dji death was like a big blow for the Kreyol Hip Hop Movement. In a country where most people saw Kreyol Hip Hop as some kind of culture suicide, it was hard to find a mentor. But it wasn't long before the hard and dedication of the young Haitian rappers paid off. ************************************************************ ***** In 1995, many new groups had emerged and a lot of new singles were released. I still remember some great singles that came out around that time, among others "Tout Moun Sou Bloff" second single by ORS, "Attention Danger" by Rap N Family, "Ate Plat" by Apoz n Super F, "Nap Fe Jefo" by a group whose name I don't remember (They had a great video for this single. There was also a good single called "Nou Pran Beton an" by Academy Rap Boyz (group formed by former ORS member Baby One King. ************************************************************ ***** Around that time, King Posse would released a first single called "Rekonsilasyon" before dropping their mega hit single "LOKAL (Baz Normal) followed by their first album "Pa Bat Kow' in 1996". Comparing to the success of Haiti Rap n Ragga album, King Posse with Haitian Buju, Samy B, Black Alex, Buddah Ranks, and Don Show had their whole country of Haiti, the young Haitians living in the US and Canada going krazy for them. ************************************************************ ***** King Posse's first album had made so much impact that a lot of people who could stand the Kreyol hip Hop Movement had begun to listen to King Posse songs and other Kreyol rap songs. Haitian Buju had become the idol of almost all the aspiring and potential rappers and ragga singers who were trying to force their voice to sing like him or doing their hair the way Haitian Buju did in Lokal video and their 96's Kanaval "Kool Non" video. ************************************************************ ****** The next year (1997) would see Original Rap Staff coming back, now with a album called "Ke Popoz' which featured 14 songs among others the hits "Plotonnen", "Tanperaman Chanje", "Tout Moun se Moun", "A toi" etc... AND THE REST IS HISTORY.........Master Dji - Tan Pou TanMaster Dji - Manmzel
