Antwerp, 2004:
Ant Music gives birth to Suite 406… Quite a creation, seeing that they immediately win the Belgian Diesel U Music ’04 Award at their first live performance… ever! (category Drum ‘n Base, Down Tempo, Nu Jazz)
It was musician/producer Rik Rosseels that was responsible for the conception. Growing up amongst dad’s 7 thousand plus vinyl jazz collection and receiving Stan Getz’s ‘The Dolphins’ album at the age of four, explains a lot. After mastering the piano, trumpet and drums, studying Jazz and graduating in electronics and samples, his name soon became known in the remix-world (Lamb, Underworld, …), even in Tokyo. After having ventured alone in the music scene for a few years, Rosseels found himself longing to build a band; and the Suite 406 idea needed live musicians, the exact right ones… It was the Antwerp “Jazz Studio†education that soon seemed to be the cross roads of the talent of all of them! Today the fresh and professional sound of Suite 406 stands alone in the new jazz scene, carried by the amazing voice of Melissa Anckaert. Via former theatre projects, hundreds of concerts with her cover band and the live concept of DJ Stephanie, the Suite 406 leading lady’s sound is known to even foreign ears and labels (i.e. Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Great Brittan). This musical level is enriched further by little Rob Christoffels on his big Bass. Rising from his classical music education (and even the boys choir!), Rob entered the underground music scene to be one of Flanders most promising bass guitarists. And when it comes to that sweeping 406-rhythm, the combination of Frank Vanweddingen on Drums got his groovy/filthy sound throughout a jazz education combined with performing live rock gigs (finalist Humo’s Rock Rally ’04, B., Blue note Competition ’05, B.)
That’s how the 406-ensemble brings a mix of nu jazz, trip hop and down tempo together in an original, uniquely Belgian mix. Suite 406 sends you on a musical journey filled with jazzy moods and soundscapes that have been compared to Kruder & Dorfmeister, St.-Germain, Dzihan & Kamien, Incognito and even Moloko and Jamiroquai.
So, if you’re looking for something “deep and closerâ€, open your ears, mind and the door of Suite 406…
