"Born in Harlem, Lived In Seattle... Back in Newark NJ... Heritage- Jamaica ...
I spent a great deal of my free time working the Seattle and Tacoma club scene as DJ Don, and DJ UNkell Don -not too many years ago, ...those were probably the best times of my life
My story starts all the way back in 1987 while in Beach Channel HS out in Far Rockaway Queens when my good friend Rohan Reid, an up and coming artist- dropped off an old set of his turntables (belt drive TECHNIQUES SBL-2's) at my house, and the interest only grew when another good friend of mine (REV) started dating MC Lyte (back when she first came out as a new artist).. I got to know the entire First Priority Records Family back then, and my interest only grew as I received more and more request to assist as a back-up DJ (closer) for a few parties in NY. Life in the early era of HIP-HOP was more fun than business back then...-Those from NY from back in that era can probably recall how accessible the artist were... (at least before they all got rich and moved out to New Jersey) They used to hang out at the malls and even outside of our High Schools. It was everyday life in NYC back then.
Over the years I "mastered" my craft and began performing as the stand up DJ pulling in large crowds every night I worked. My name was featured on countless fliers, and I even had a small fan base :) This artform had become a natural talent that I was always willing to demonstrate, and of course, I was always showing off my skills when at the helm of my Gold 1200's. The DJ puts on the show, the music is the prop... I loved to move the crowd, and I lived for good floorfillers... Not All DJ's are good- right... Trust and believe- I am truely talented with my mastery-...- I only missed my calling by not perusing it further- I walked away from a very generous Seattle radio station offer... My greatest regret in life...Sorry Mr. E.P.- It was my ego, not you...
The Night Clubs...What a ride it was then and thank you goes out to HEIKO HEINZ (formally with Sony Music) for delivering me to the Seattle Nightlife back then and to Cali artist DRU DOWN for asking "WHAT THE UNCLE DONALD DOING?" Because that became my thing- if it wasn't for my big mouth and big ego- it probably would have not happened, and especially thank you to all who bought the many mixed tapes sold out of my trunk, in the clubs, and in the Tacoma area record shops... for helping finance my lifestyle back then... but now (Finally) I am grounded, back on the east coast, committed to my family, raising my kids, and enjoying watching them grow as I continue to grow myself...
-But ones always gotta have a plan B- Right... With this reality, I had attempted to settle in various career opportunities over a period of a few years, doing something a bit risky by creating my own successful internet based business, acquiring some land assets and finally becoming a full time Locomotive Engineer (yes chasing another childhood dream), and all the while eager for more opportunities to come along... Using my life tools and lessons which enabled me to quickly move up the management ladder, and now I am working full time as a Senior Engineer/ Line Operations Manager with NJ Transit (Midtown Direct) - I'm a true Taurus- so I like to be in control all the time. - But my story will not end on this note... I have a few other big projects currently in the works...
With that being said, music in general will always be my first passion (photography my second)- We live music!...and for me... Not only as the former DJ performer, but also in having a very supportive brother (KEN MAC- aka Boogie) who for as long as I can remember back has been performing on stage, promoting and signing on new talent, and whom is still busy to this very day pushing artists to their limits ((SHOUT OUT TO MY MAN SCREECHY DAN- !)) Watch Out For My Nephews Marlon and Kenmar- they will be the next ones to rise up to the occasion -
AND FINALLY...BIG UP TO THE FAM AT THE LIVING ROOM STUDIOS Formally in Brooklyn (Alot of talent graced those halls)... Now in Kingston Jamaica and Big Up to Track Headz Studio in Brooklyn, Shaggy, Red Fox, Atlanta Fam- Justice, Edward Gardener, my entire Ft. Lauderdale Music Fam (Cross Familia)- and my very close Miami connections at Rebelmix.com (Wat G'wan John) and the Ace himself... Supa Dups (Black Chiney Soundsystem) Platnum Artist Producer of:- Notch (Thanks for the hook up bro), Willy Chin (You too :)John Legend, Collie Budz, Sean Paul, Akon and on and on... - Thats Fam!
