No black person stared back at me Not the culture; The slang The good: The praises, shouts of amen’s, or loud boldness Nor the generational camaraderie Weaved into the hearts, blood, and minds Created by ancestral links filled with betrayal, Struggle, downfalls, and glorious victories Nor the bad: The fallout of young children, their Pressures and shortcomings, past and future, Culminated into a generation Littered with the illiterate voice Of a babe, Shouting in the distinct voice of Primitive isolationist clichés and flares Where all is for one and one for all, Their all; their one; no one else’s. Empathetic undertones linked forever By an overriding color.Concentrating on my mirror There lay no white person there either Not in the majority strength And majority variation Nor in their voices loud or small, vocal Or pompous or philosophical, lost or found; Individual family lines of Saxon, French, Italian, And a multitude of meshed family pasts Coming together in a homogenized society. the sad, Those shameful arrogant actions of fear Or bigotry, or racial superiority That marked a white man’s burden Hands stained In dialects of sorrow Their voices different Yet the same Crying for their culture, Their women, children, Their freedom, dignity, Back from the swords and guns And pale hands That have shattered it.In the mirror Stood only I, Mixed…not black, white, Asian, Hispanic Or any other racial name I was the anomaly of social standing A change in its order The last final mesh of peoples Creating one people, one face New and exotic Unpredictable And in a colored no mans land Where I am free To create my identity My own patterns. The trials, fights of a people, old No longer mine in a generation, new. Little white girls and little white boys And little black girls and little black boys Have slowly found each other. Stumbling awkwardly in their games together Until there appeared little brown girls And little brown boys of all plausible shades. And who were they to pick apart the color Of a lighter shaded child? When those little lights and little darks Could show the face of family As easily as friend. The little whites and little blacks Disappear Till all that is seen is the little children Behind them.
