Words and Music Songwriter Showcase

About Me

The Words and Music Songwriter Showcase is a celebration of original music from Central New York and beyond, featuring established and emerging artists of all genres in an up-close-and-personal acoustic setting.

The series host is singer-songwriter, author, and NPR contributor Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers. Each show includes:

> A featured artist performing a full set, plus an opening set of songwriters in the round.
> The Song Schmooze, where musicians and music lovers mingle over a drink and a bite to eat.
> Plus special guests…surprise collaborations…and the Soundbite of the Night, where Rodgers shares a memorable moment from his extraordinary archive of interviews with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Jerry Garcia, Ani DiFranco, and Dave Matthews.

The Words and Music series presents concerts at Jazz Central , an intimate theater at 441 E. Washington Street in downtown Syracuse, New York ( map it ); and at the Auburn Public Theater . To reserve tickets, email [email protected].

Calling all CNY songwriters
Come join the Woods and Music Songwriter Woodshed. This is a musicians-only gathering where you can share a work in progress and get feedback from your peers. The Woodshed meets the first Tuesday of each month at Sparky Town in Syracuse. Click here for details.

If you're interested in performing at the showcase, tell me a little about yourself and your music. Briefly describe your original songs and where/how you've performed them (and remember that great songs are more important than great credits). Send links to two or three songs I can hear online--choose tracks that are closest to how you sound playing solo.
Thanks for supporting original music.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
Dennis Bergman Broom
with Jeneen Terrana and Charles Marlowe

Dennis Bergman Broom was for many years Central New York’s dean of songwriters in the acoustic pop vein. He performed with Graham Nash, Suzanne Vega, Gilberto Gil, and the Roches and also made regular appearances as a mere nubile at the legendary Speakeasy in New York City’s West Village during its salad days. The Oh So Sensitive Sidemen, his six-piece backing combo, was one of Syracuse’s best and best-loved folk/pop groups in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Several of the Sidemen, including Hanna Richardson and Dave Goldman, will appear with Broom at Jazz Central. He now lives in Seattle and performs on electric guitar, piano, and sometimes baritone ukulele. In addition to ample time spent worrying about future wars, he draws thousands of oblique one-punch comics and is penning his immature memoirs.

Jeneen Terrana's music is driven by her haunting vocal style mixed with alternative rock and blues, akin to artists such as Patty Griffin, K.D. Lang, and Lucinda Williams. Terrana grew up in Buffalo and is now based in Queens. She recently returned from a month-long European tour with songwriter Silbin Sandovar.

Charles Marlowe writes country and pop songs and performs at various venues and open mikes around Syracuse.

Influences: The lap of windshield wipers late at night...love, lost and found...the ring of guitar strings...unexpected grooves...conversations overheard in a bar...weird piano chords...things you wish you'd said...wondering if anyone else knows the feeling...
Sounds Like: One hell of a cool show. "A veritable smorgasbord for all music fans, from smoky blues to light and sentimental country and upbeat folk songs," in the words of the Syracuse New Times reviewing the series' premiere.

Record Label: We don't need no stinkin' label.
