Anche a voler trascurare le loro innumerevoli sottospecie, le tre varietà di TOPI cittadini insieme alle due razze più comuni di TOPI di campagna, contano nel nostro Paese oltre due cento milioni di esemplari.
(Even if not considering their numberless subspecies, the three varieties of city MICE, together with the most common country MICE, reckon, in our country, more than two hundred millions specimen.)
Ne esistono dunque quattro TOPI per ogni Italiano.

Di tutti i mammiferi che popolano la Terra, il TOPO è forse uno dei più recenti. La sua evoluzione ebbe inizio nell'emisfero settentrionale circa 35 milioni di anni fa, in pieno Oligocene e da quel TOPO antico, il primo completamente evoluto, naquero con rapidità sorprendente e si diffusero a Sud, nelle penisole continentali dell'Oriente, nell'Africa e nel Sud America, tutte quelle infinite varietà che dovevano dar vita agli attuali TOPI.
(Of every mammals that populate the Earth, the MOUSE is perhaps one of the most recent. Its evolution begun in the northern emisphere circa 35 millions years ago, in broad Oligocene, and from that ancient MOUSE, the first fully developed one, all these infinite variety were born and spred out with outstanding rapidity in the South, in the western continental peninsula, in Africa and in South America.)
Tra questi si contano oggi più di settanta tipi di TOPI, ognuno dei quali comprende parecchie decine di specie e diverse centinaia di sottospecie.
