I am DJ BPM.
In 1996 I formed drum and bass band "SampleTerrorist" we were one of the first ever live Drum and Bass bands, incorporating a real drummer and a drum sequencer (using a Groove Box). Our biggest gig was playing the Megadog festival in Cornwall on the beach just before Dave The Drummer. Unfortunately DJ Simple, who did the sequencing, dropped out and it was too complicated to get someone to replace him.
Then I got some decks and tunes started messing around, but I wasnt really serious about djing, it was just something to keep me off Nintendo 64, now its an addiction in itself.
I started mixing with Jungle, drum and bass and techno, but got into Grime in 2004. I am deeply impressed by the music which has been produced on the Grime, Sublow and Dubstep scene.
It is only really for the last five years I have been developing the skills and confidence to do what I want to do as a DJ. I think I work like a fine artist, a lot of my mixes are compositional, I can and often do spend months working on a set.
The idea of a compositional mix is that I would like the listener to be left with the feeling you experience after a good movie, as if something has shifted inside. I am awed & exilarated by the tunes I play and I want that to come across in the mix.
I hear so many people talking as if Grime is only about bashing someone over the head with base ball bats (although have to say S.K.I.T.Z beats "Battle Riddim" feat Tempz is one of my favorite vocal tracks ever), but I have heard some of the most beautiful and romantic deep tunes coming from the grime and dubstep scene which are nothing to do with violence.
The first time I played grime/dubstep/sublow out was on a beach in Italy September 2005, for Unsound. Since then Ive played grime sublow and dubstep in venues such as Fridge Brixton, Red Star Camberwell, Medussa's Brixton, Albany Empire Deptford, Berlin, Czech Breakfest, Colombia, and for different promoters and sound systems such as Wireless FM, Siren S.S, Amorphous, Bogotrax, Audiotrix, Reknaw, Acme Sounds, Audio Interface Revolution, Hyper FM and many more. Playing Dubstep in Colombia as part of Bogotrax International Electronic Music Festival was an amazing experience and I did both a live broadcast and interview on two of Bogota's biggest student radio stations.
I am really proud to have played on the same line ups as some of the DJ's and producers I most respect in the world including Ixindamix, Meltdown Mickey from Spiral Tribe/Audiotrix, Pendulum, Andy C, Nicky Black Market, Aphrodite, Kenny Ken, Switch (Amorphous) and many more.
Spiral Tribe have been probably the singlular most influential music & artist collective from the underground dance music scene. Walking into a Spiral Tribe squat party in Carnegie Library in Deptford changed my life, it was a divine experience to me (neither joking nor blaspheming). I wouldnt be here now doing what I do if it hadnt been for that moment. And it is so nice to have come to know some of Spirals as people and friends and they are still inspiring me, especial respects to Debbie aka Feenix13 now VJing with Audiotrix. (www.audiotrix.org)
I used to do a show featuring my mate Johnny Tight Lips aka Mr Mysterious on the mic (almost) every Saturday night on www.wirelessfm.net an underground station on which we could pretty much play what we liked. Much respect to the Wirelessfm crew the loveliest bunch of anarchists and punks in the world! I had a lot of fun with guest dj's coming over to play, some have played anything from punk, dub, gabba, ska, old skool hardcore, acid house, breakbeat, drum and bass and grime and dubstep.
I have just started a new dubstep show on Naked Beatz Radio (www.nakedbeatz.com), 8-10pm every other Thursday, from 09/04/09. I am sharing the slot with DJ New Orda who will be playing alternate weeks with me.
My have been making own productions for years, way before I started Djing, but my productions are usually quite experimental, for me the most important thing to me about a tune is its soul, everyting else comes after, I love many different kinds of music from Classical to experimental to Elvis Presley, Irish Traditional, Punk and Frankie Laine Country and Western and I use these influences in my own productions.
Im a spiritual person, I know I am reincarnated because every molecule in my body is comprised of molecules that have come from the earth the air the water and the sun. My body is made up of tiny particles which may have come from a dinosaurs brain, or dust from the moon. I am part of the world and the light from stars have shone on my skin and I believe in life after death.
I believe music is a very powerful and usually positive force. When I play music it can raise the hairs on the back of my neck, it can make me happy, make me sad, it makes my heart beat faster, beat slower. To me music is a kind of magic or language deep pure and beautiful. K
