The Coat Hanger Project is a documentary film by Angie Young about abortion and the current state of the prochoice movement.
In 2006, South Dakota Legislature made an attempt to ban all abortion in the state, without exception for rape or incest. HB 1215, signed by Gov. Mike Rounds in early 2006, was the most rigid abortion ban a state had put forth since the passage of Roe v Wade.
A grassroots, prochoice effort called the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families came together and mobilized volunteers and activists to contact voters to rally and vote against the ban.
Angie Young was a part of this effort. In November 2006, the people of South Dakota voted to reject the ban. This was a significant symbolic victory for the pro-choice side, as it represents the only time since Roe that a state had a chance to end abortion without exception - and failed.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Before the legalization of abortion in 1973, thousands of women died from complications resulting from illegal abortions in the USA. Currently, the Alan Guttmacher Institute estimates that 80,000 women die annually from unsafe, illegal abortions.
The title of this documentary, "The Coat Hanger Project," evokes a memory of what almost became the only abortion alternative for women in South Dakota.
