In the glory years of the early nineties, when Boys II Men and Nirvana alike dominated the airwaves- a revolutionary musical voice was born. In their 4th grade years, Duncan Webster and Stephen Coffman began covering Nirvana songs, as well as Wipe Out. (They were also joined by Nick Walhauser in the early days, as well as other bands with Ryland and Carson Fishel.) Duncan had already bought an assortment of flannel shirts and knew the lyrics to every tune on Doolittle by the Pixies. Stephen was a really good soccer player.
Determined to fit in and be accepted as 'cool,' Will Goble decided that he would become the bassist for this exciting new band (called Basement at the time). However, Will did not have a bass, and he was afraid to ask his dad to use his. So he bought a 30$ Casio keyboard from circuit city with his mom's money. Emboldened by this purchase, Will learned the bass lines to "Come As You Are" and "All Apologies." He joined the trio at their elementary school talent show and played the bass line to Come As You Are with the little keyboard speaker next to the microphone. He pretended to play Wipe Out. And thus, this world changing band was born.
Will got a bass later, and learned how to play it. Stephen's feet finally grew to reach the pedals on his drumset, and Duncan was, well, awkward. By 8th grade, Slippery Chicken added a 4th member, Joe Hall, who was much taller and closer to puberty than the other members.
The music on this page is taken from the subsequent album: 'Nosotros Somos Pollo Resbaloso." It was recorded at Studio Five in Mebane (?), North Carolina. And yes, that's Stephen singing back up on Smellin funny, not his little brother.
