***FULL STORY***
Hi, welcome to The Grams!
Well, where do we start the story...? Let’s say, sometime at the beginning of 2003. I assembled a new band and named it The Grams. And stop! The first incarnation didn’t last long (wrong time, wrong band outfit,...). So, I took a long break. By the end of 2005 the musical picture I wanted to take became clear and the drummer was the first one to join. That gave me the opportunity to hear the backbone of the songs I carried around in my head. But The Grams needed more personnel, so a Rhodes & organ player came next. Two down, still two to go! But I took my time, didn’t wanna rush things anymore. A bass player got on board in 2006. And yes, finally in the spring of 2007 we got the whole thing going, a lead guitarist finished the line-up.
So, where are we now? Well, actually still at the beginning but The Grams are very alive again, hell yeah, and we are exploring the music and ideas I had in my attic for a while. So, what’s up there? Well, a whole lot to be honest! Let me give you a couple of hints to get you in the mindset I started from when creating the band (second time around), you know, the things that fill my head when writing songs, etc. So here we go ... try to think about yourself in your mid-twenties, somewhere across the United States on July the 10th of 1974. It’s a sunny afternoon and you’re carrying the new Neil Young album ‘On The Beach’ home. While listening to the album, despite the warmth, cold shivers engulf your body and you reminisce about some inspiring musical landmarks you discovered in the recent past. Jon Landau told you ‘I saw rock and roll's future, and its name is Bruce Springsteen’. But you already knew he would be part of that future ‘cause Lester Bangs’ 1973 review of ‘Greetings from Ashbury Park, N.J.’ in Rolling Stone magazine forced you to buy the album and hot damn it was the best ever holiday card you received. A card that reminded you of The Band, Bob Dylan’s ‘Highway 61 Revisited’, Van Morisson’s singing and songwriting and so much more. So, the New York area was pouring out some of his best, ‘cause also the earliest punk you discovered was hailing from its streets. A couple of weeks ago you saw there the first show of this new band called The Ramones. And you remember the Velvet Underground gigs you saw at Max’ s Kansas City and yeah, you remember that Gram Parsons gig there. Damn you played ‘Hot burrito 2’ over and over again in the spring of 1969 and you almost forgot ‘1 Record’ by Big Star. You bought it last year, and ooh man, it took you back to these jingle-janglin’ Byrds sounds and British bands The Who, The Beatles, The Zombies, etc. They blew your socks off almost a decade ago! And you smile when you think about this Memphis based band getting a hold of these UK influences while these bands themselves owe more than a lot to the Memphis based label Stax Records & Detroit’s Motown Records. And your smile stretches even an inch wider when you relive the memories you have to those ‘Holland-Dozier-Holland’ compositions. And hail rock ’n’ roll, they influenced also those mid-sixties garage bands you’re into, damn you love The Sonics! Ooh yeah and The Count Five, and The Music Machine and ... ‘On the Beach’ has been turned over and it's ready once again, time to put his previous record ‘Harvest’ on and ... I think by now I can see you sneaking round the corner of my mind. This quick run through my record collection and (imaginary) concert memories got you there! We hope you enjoy your stay with us, ‘cause we are ready to ride the wave, catch us while you can ‘cause surf’s up!
