About Me
Simone Giuliani, better known as 4MuLA, is a music composer and producer. He is being active in the music industry for the past thirteen years.
Born in Florence, Italy, he discovered at the tender age of six that his grandmother, Armida Ceccuzzi from Naples, was one of the first female musicians in Europe, touring with a traveling circus at the beginning of the century as a singer and mandolin player. Or maybe it was a lie, too late anyway: Simone studied classical piano from the age of ten, continued taking classes at Accademia Musicale di Firenze and later enrolled at the State Conservatory Of Music S. Cecilia in Florence, where he graduated in Music Theory & Harmony. While still studying piano, he toured Italy with the punk-rock cult band Diaframma and recorded four albums with them. In 1991, with Francesco Cipriani and Kareem Bennett he started Funkareem, one of the few original and real future-funk/hip-hop acts in Italy at the time, following the steps of A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots and Living Colour. He pursued studies of Jazz Piano & Improvisation with Stefano Bollani and Ray Santisi, piano teacher of Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett, at Berklee Music Schools Clinics. He recently enrolled at The Juilliard School, studying Orchestration with Daniel Ott.
He moved to London at the end of the 90s where he embraced the stage-name 4MuLA and started touring with Psychic Phenomena, a 10-pieces organic hip-hop ensemble opening among others for The Roots and Groove Collective. At the same time he produced R&B/Soul collective Global Soul Movement and started collaborating with Mercury Awards-nominated producer Drew Horley (TY, Natalie Williams, Bugz In The Attic, Roots Manuva), a friendship that still lasts to this day. In 2000, in his East-London studio he met DJ Corrado Bay who introduced him to the wonders of turntablism, broken-beat, nu-jazz & afro beats and offered him to join forces in the United States.
He moved to Miami the same year and the team gave birth to two electronic music projects: Racoon and Lazybatusu. They appeared in more than 80 compilations released worldwide and reached the Top 10 Music Chart in iTunes Music Store for Electronic music with their album “00.03â€only one week after its release. 4MuLA & Corrado Bay then founded Emunity Records, an independent record label focusing on electronic music, discovering and promoting new talents.
In 2004, he moved to New York where he started a solid music partnership with Brazilian arranger/composer Ze Luis Oliveira (Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Bebel Gilberto, Tania Maria, Brazilian Girls). 4MuLA also writes music for national TV and movies; among his works are CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the theme for CBS News (Logo/VH1), Naomi Campbell Biography on E! Entertainment Tonight and the TV movie “A Raisin In The Sun†featuring Sean P. Diddy Combs and John Stamos.
In 2007 he started collaborating as Digital Audio Editor with Monterey Jazz Festival Records/Concord Music Group working on the releases of Miles Davis Quintet, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong and Tito Puente. 4MuLA is currently recording and producing ’Sambismo’ a new project with Ze Luis and Beco Dranoff. He’s also remixing other artists and enjoying a hectic New York life. His not-so-secret dream is to record an album with the marching band from his village in Tuscany.
