„Jazz del Sur†is the first solo album of guitarist Ilan Levanon, who was born in Argentina and grew up in Brazil. Having spent his youth in several different cities of Latin America, his music can be understood as a trip of senses and travel through time to his “spiritual homeâ€, as Levanon describes his compositions.
Accompanied by his friends, the most sought-after musicians of Hamburg, where Ilan Levanon lives and where the CD was recorded in 2009, he creates a sound layer of easiness, although highly sophisticated but never too complicated. This is probably the most significant attribute of Levanon’s music: artful and complex melodies imbedded in clever rhythms, presented in a plausible lightness. Folk and jazz are combined to exotic tone colours in a fascinating and appealing way.
The instruments: double bass (Omar Rodriguez Calvo, Ralph Klinzmann), drums (Hanjo Polk, Heinz Lichius), flute (Anne Wiemann), saxophone (Leandro Saint-Hill) and guitars by Ilan Levanon. The producer André Tietze completed the masterpiece with sensitive mixing of the tracks.
