Dr. Noah Drake first arrived in Port Charles in the early eighties. Handsome, young and promiscuous, Noah was a generic surgeon with no established specialty. In addition to his hospital work, Noah did volunteer work at a waterfront health clinic, and helped out at Rick Webber's community Sports Center, where he befriended boxer Johnny Morrisson and even coached him temporarily.
Noah came from a wealthy New York family home based on Long Island; an only child, Noah was often visited in PC by his uncle Martin Drake, a prominent New York senator. While practicing medicine at GH, there were three women with whom Noah was seriously involved: Bobbie Spencer; Anne Logan; and Tiffany Hill. All three heartbroken women recognized Noah's fatal flaw - he was unable to make a commitment to one woman - a flaw which caused each relationship to fail. After being dumped by both Bobbie and Tiffany in the course of one week, Noah cashed in his chips and joined a hospital in Atlanta.
When he first arrived at GH, it was established that he and Bobbie had "met" previously at a medical convention in New York City. Gaining the seal of approval from her family, Bobbie started to date Noah, who made her feel special after her botched relationships. She told Noah about her growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, but he didn't care; finally, Bobbie had met a man who respected her for what she was. Unfortunately, Noah respected other women at GH as well. Even Amy dedicated part of her meager youth to woo this philandering physician. After catching Noah massaging Nurse Stacey's neck, Bobbie made it clear that she wouldn't be simply another one of his conquests.
When Bobbie worried for missing brother Luke (who'd gone to the Cassadine island), Noah offered to help her find him, and they flew to Senator Drake's New York penthouse to utilize Drake's WSB contacts. Staying for the weekend, Noah assured Bobbie he would place no pressure on her to sleep with him. His patience deepened when a bomb exploded in GH and temporarily blinded Bobbie. Noah kept vigil by her bedside and stood by her until she regained her sight. However, being true to character, Noah's eyes wandered to Nurse Anne Logan as they worked side by side in E.R.
After Bobbie refused to go on a weekend getaway with Noah, he turned to Anne (recently dumped by Jeff Webber). Bobbie, who'd suddenly wised up and realized she wanted to marry Noah, went to Noah's apartment, but she heard Anne's voice within. Dejected, she went out with Joe Kelly (Anne's former flame) and the two couples bumped into each other at the same restaurant. The next day, Noah apologized to Bobbie and they made up.
Tension soon returned to their relationship after Senator Drake acted rudely to Ruby (while she was scrubbing the floors at GH) and Luke's soured outlook on the snobbish senator caused Drake to withdraw support from Luke's political aspirations. Noah allowed himself to be seduced by Nurse Stacey, who later picked up Noah's phone when Bobbie called to patch things up. Upon confronting the two at GH, devastated Bobbie blasted them for their indiscretion. Noah swore that Stacey meant nothing to him, but Bobbie screamed it was over between them forever. The next day Bobbie and Noah made up.
Two days later, Bobbie and Noah slept together for the first time. But Noah soon felt smothered by Bobbie, who started moving things into his apartment and was jealous at the drop of a hat. This drove him closer to Anne. Bobbie then incurred Senator Drake's wrath when she told Noah about her anger that Drake was staying w/them, and when she wanted Noah to break his family tradition and spend Thanksgiving with her. He didn't, and Senator Drake began to check into Bobbie's past. When Ruby learned through an old friend that Drake was investigating her family she told Bobbie. Bobbie finally told Noah she was a hooker, but he said he already knew - thanks to his uncle. Regardless, he told the senator to stay out of his personal life.
Bobbie decided she needed to hear the words "I love you" from Noah, but he told her he couldn't say them. Later, Bobbie faked a relapse of blindness to get hold of Noah; it worked, and he felt forced to mutter the magic words. During her "rehab," Bobbie exploited Noah's admission of love to keep him beside her, but when secretly seeing the look on trapped Noah's face, she told him she wasn't blind and they agreed it was over between them. Noah gave Bobbie a charm to remember him by, and she left town to be a head nurse in New York City.
Noah wasted no time and started to date Anne Logan. However, their relationship was strained when she resolved to prove that Dr. Arthur Bradshaw - a surgeon at GH and an old family friend of Noah's - was psychologically imbalanced and unfit to practice medicine. Even after Bradshaw nearly killed Ruby during an operation (he insisted upon performing what Noah deemed an unnecessary radical hysterectomy, then nicked an artery and almost killed Ruby; Noah took over and saved Ruby's life), Noah refused to believe Bradshaw was as bad as Anne claimed. They fought, but Anne soon forgave Noah and they later ended up in bed... but Noah told her he couldn't make love to her; she was too good a friend. He and Anne continued to fight about Bradshaw until she finally presented him with proof of her convictions. They tried to amass more evidence together, but Noah was still angry with Anne for causing this trouble and he soon found himself dancing with Tiffany Hill. Though supportive of Anne at Bradshaw's trial for misconduct, he couldn't tell her he loved her, and Anne left town with adopted son Jeremy to live on her Aunt Lucille's farm.
Before the wheels of Anne's plane left Port Charles soil, Noah had already taken up with Tiffany, much to the jealous twinges of Blackie Parrish and Robert Scorpio (Tiff's one time companion). He gave Tiff a framed poster from one of Tiff's old movies and she was immediately his, adjusting her schedule at the Haunted Star restaurant to make time to be with Noah. He even cooked her dinner, something no man had ever done for Tiff.
Soon, Noah was involved with her circle of friends, loaning money to Luke and Holly and other residents of Port Charles who'd gotten entangled in Holly Sutton's oil scam. Senator Drake arrived to visit Noah and was immediately entranced with Tiff, his favorite "vintage" movie star. Drake said Tiff, unlike Bobbie, was worthy of being in the Drake family, and invited her and Noah to join him and Noah's parents in New York City for a fundraising weekend. When Noah's GH schedule prevented him from going, he was touched as Tiff turned down his uncle's offer to go anyway.
They continued to date, but when Tiff's old flame Tom Clark came to town, Noah saw her and Tom dancing. Tiff relished Noah's jealousy, but he didn't think it was amusing; they fought and Tiff walked out on him. But Noah couldn't go without Tiff for long, and when he was able to take a two week vacation (to Oyster Bay and Cannes) before attending a seminar, he invited Tiff to join him, explaining his actions by saying he'd never been in love... before Tiff.
When Noah returned from his seminar, he found that Tiff had gone broke because of the oil scam. He came to her rescue and paid off the mortgage on the Haunted Star restaurant, as well as the back rent on her apartment. Tiff was there for Noah as well, after a young patient of his died and left him devastated. Therapy with Gail Baldwin helped, but it was Tiff's love that pulled Noah through. Trouble soon reared its ugly head in this paradise, as Noah was interested to hear that Bobbie was returning to town. Tiff became insanely jealous, which forced emotionally claustrophobic Noah to walk out on her, but when Ruby assured them both that Bobbie was not meant for Noah, they patched things up.
After seeing Noah and Bobbie work closely together at GH, Tiff confronted Bobbie and made it clear Noah was her man. But Tiff couldn't believe that Noah had secretly given Bobbie $5,000 to bail out Holly from the oil scam, and they had a fight. Noah looked for solace, of course, from Bobbie, and the two nearly went to bed together, but Tiff's call to make up with Noah interrupted them. Noah eventually did make up with Tiff, and he bought her a ring for X-Mas and offered to take her to his family home for the holidays, but when Tiff saw Bobbie try the ring on, she stormed out. By the time Tiff navigated through Bobbie's wild goose chase and came to forgive Noah, he had already gone for the holidays.
Noah returned and wanted to make up with Tiff, but Bobbie interceded yet again and actively pursued him. At a New Year's Eve party, Noah danced with Tiff, but was jealous of Bobbie with her date, old flame David Arlen. Noah continued to date Tiff, but his interest in Bobbie was growing, and after a heavy day working on patients, he and Bobbie returned to his apartment. She presented him with a painting he admired, and that clinched it; they ran to the bedroom. The next morning, Noah called Tiff to tell her he had something serious to discuss. She expected him to propose, but he surprised her by saying they should see other people. Later, Bobbie tried to soothe his guilt, but he wanted to be alone. What he really wanted was both Bobbie and Tiff.
After continued neglect, Bobbie told Noah he had to make a choice and stick with it for good. He chose Bobbie, which prompted Tiff to accept an offer from pal Mickey to do commercials in New York City. Noah seemed happy with Bobbie and comforted her after the "death" of Luke, but when Tiff returned, Noah's libido was again triggered. Noah invited Bobbie to have dinner with his visiting parents and when Tiff learned of this, she called Senator Drake and got herself invited. Tiff arranged for Bobbie to be forced to wear an outrageous dress to the dinner, then proceeded to win over Noah's parents and hog the attention away from Bobbie. Bobbie stormed out in a rage.
Noah tried to win Bobbie back by inviting her to join him on staff at a hospital in Atlanta, but she thought he treated her like a whore at dinner and told him they were through for good. Noah then had Tiff come to his apartment, where he offered to start anew with her. They made their way to the bedroom... where Tiff told him forget it. She called him immature and incapable of real love. Noah left for Atlanta.
Over twenty years later, Noah returned to Port Charles after he was tracked down by Dr. Robin Scorpio. Robin's old flame, Jason Morgan was suffering from a rare brain disorder, and she was convinced Noah was the only person that could save him. Unfortunately, Robin found Noah slumped over in a bar-far from his days as the brilliant surgeon. Noah admitted to Robin he'd quit medicine and could not return to Port Charles. After Robin made an emotional plea for Noah to save Jason he agreed to return. Noah, however, was unable to stop drinking and when Jason's fiancÃe, Sam McCall caught him with a drink she refused to let him operate. Noah told Robin there was another doctor that could successfully perform the surgery- his son Patrick Drake. When Robin returned to Port Charles with Patrick, it was clear that father & son were not on good terms. As it turned out, Noah's decision to quit medicine occurred after he'd lost Patrick's mother on the operating table. Patrick never forgave his dad for turning to alcohol, and Noah never forgave himself for not being able to save his wife's life. Despite their differences, Patrick worried about his father's drinking problem, and begged him to get help. Noah agreed to go to rehab and has been sober since.
When Noah came back from his rehabilitation program, Port Charles was hit with the Encephalitis virus. He returned to the hospital and worked side by side with other doctors to contain the virus. However, Noah was in need of medical attention as well. It turned out all his years of drinking severely damaged his liver and he was in need of a transplant. Noah refused to put himself on the donor list, because he felt other people were more worthy of having their lives saved. Patrick was not about to lose both his parents, and when Noah fell unconscious, Patrick decided to go against his father's wishes and donate part of his liver. When Noah realized he now had part of his son's liver, he was furious with Patrick for putting his own life in danger. Noah threatened to sue General Hospital, but later realized Patrick's actions stemmed from a place of love. Noah's now determined to get back his reputation as a valuable doctor and to do whatever it takes to stay sober.
