Well, er... I'm just a person who is deeply concerned about the destruction of this awesome planet we live on and how its fate is in the hands of a minority of greedy idiots. I believe that we must do whatever it takes to put an immediate halt to the slaughter of our fellow human beings and instead unite as one and take immediate action to preserve this planet for the sake of our children.
I'm a studio tech - mainly music and film related. I have always been into music. My mum has always been into classical music and I was exposed to a lot of it as a young kid and grew to love it. My father was an Anglican minister and I also heard a lot of religious music. I became attracted to the massive pipe organs they had in churches! But I was told no, I had to learn piano first, which to me at the time was just a boring instrument which was played at Sunday schools. I did a few years of piano lessons but got turned off by this horrible, shrivelled old lady music teacher!
We didn't listen to much pop music in our family (and strictly religious music only on Sundays) - the HMV mantle radio was usually tuned to the ABC. In 1959 (I'm 6), my grandmother returned from an overseas trip and brought back with her a very early transistor radio which she ended up giving to me. I used to hide with it under the blankets late at night and listen to the rock and roll stations! I used to love visiting my auntie, who went out and bought herself a portable stereogram and had all the latest pop records.
I became interested in the stuff that recorded and played the music - hi-fi's, tape recorders and so on and used to play with them a lot, then started building things like radios and amps.
I always wanted to pursue a career that involved both music and the technology. I did a lot of PA work in my early days whilst studying electronic engineering and then a small 4-track studio. Got a job at a film studio in the sound department, mainly designing, building and maintaining equipment, but still with some hands on sound work. Later (1977 - 1981) got a job at Albert Studios in King Street, Sydney where I did a lot of sound engineering as well as being the in-house tech - even had a couple of dudes working for me at one point. I met a lot of the top musicians and producers whilst working there. No, I'm not going to drop you a whole lot of names to impress you with!
After that I stupidly went into business on my own, Studio Connections , which I still do today servicing studios in and around Sydney and the Central Coast. However, it meant an end to my recording career.
My hi-fi, PA, film sound, music recording and production experience helps me to be a better tech and vice-versa. I'm always thinking about ways to improve things and what really makes "good sound". I love being in and around music production and music will always remain the great passion of my life.
These days, I have a lot of computer knowledge and experience and am into writing programs and web design. I am also very interested in energy efficient building design and have been working on an idea for years about a solar powered natural heating and cooling system - I know it works, I built one once.
I currently live alone. I am blessed with two beautiful kids - Martin and Jemma - who I am very proud of. They're both grown up now but I still see them a lot. I love them both very much.
