Born and raised in Paris, Tennessee, Kenny grew up in a musical family and started playing the mandolin at the age of 9. Played bluegrass music all over the country from Florida to Alaska.Reported Debra McKinney/Anchorage Daily News:Kenny Snow, a former Tennessee State Mandolin Champion, played with Tom Henderson's "The Friends of Bluegrass" and the late great Fiddlin' Chubby Anthony, formerly of the Stanley Brothers, as well as Splitwater Creek out of Western Kentucky and Ginger Boatwright and The Sipsey River Band.
"He loves music better than he loves to eat," Ginger Boatwright said of Snow. Their friendship goes way back to Nashville. They met there at the Exit/In in 1972, when Boatwright was with Red, White and Blue Grass, along with Norman Blake.
"I'm telling you, they were one of the best bands in the '70s and '80s; there wasn't anybody better," said Snow, who followed them across the country. "They were on the progressive side of bluegrass, and they'd have people like Vassar Clemens, the absolute best in the business, playing with them."
At the Exit/In, Snow went backstage to meet band members and ended up playing for them, including Blake's "Nine Years Waltz," "one of the most difficult songs to play I've ever known," Boatwright said. Making it even harder was that Snow had learned it off an 8-track tape that was a half-tone off.
"He learned that sucker in C sharp," she said. "Blew Norman Blake's mind."
And now, here they are, in a new band together, "Ginger Boatwright and The Sipsey River Band". That can only be a good thing for Alaska's bluegrass lovers.Kenny moved to Houston, Texas in December of 2006 and now plays with Country Jim Sloan and The Texas All Stars. They also have a Bluegrass Band.Kenny just took 2nd place in the 2008 Texas State Mandolin Championships.
