About Me

Stories

Most of our songs are about our experiences. "Stocking Island" was inspired by a place in the Bahamas where Colin has spent a lot of time. "No Redeeming Features" is about a couple we met who seemed incompatible at first, but who obviously belonged together once we got to know them better.

Here's the story behind "And the Women".

One night I was entertaining a couple of young ladies outside a cottage near the beach at Pointe-de-Poulet (Chicken Butt Point) on Guadeloupe. After a certain number of planteurs (one of those drinks that has absolutely no effect on you, you think, until you drink that fourteenth one and wake up on an entirely different island wearing random parts of the uniform of a boatswain in the Italian navy), it occurred to me just what the allure of the islands is all about. It's the same, it turns out, as the allure of every other place. So I catalogued many features of Guadeloupe, a butterfly-shaped island of varied geography, while returning in the refrain to what was, and continually is, really on my mind.Actual poets will not be astonished to hear that I wrote the three verses on the spot, within minutes, practically as I sang them. The bridge took about ten years longer. Such is the creative process.
Wonder what the story is behind a song? Drop us a line and ask. If we don't have a story we'll make up one on the spot.
