Fans of Latin music will be delighted by the sizzling, red-hot sound of this 10-piece Caribbean salsa band. Aguamiel has proven to be magnetically attractive to salsa lovers of all ages. In 2003, eight musicians and singers brought their extensive experience and talents together to form the band, with the intention of diversifying the Latin music scene here in the Northwest. Not only does Aguamiel feature traditional Latin styles, but also includes the contemporary Cuban musical style known as timba, filled with hip-hop, funk and jazz inspired bass patterns and aggressive rhythms. The musicians are veteran salsa players who are equally at home playing in both the old Cuban and contemporary styles. The band members represent a diversity of cultures in their own right while dedicated to expanding Latino culture through their music.
Aguamiel has performed in many different venues for crowds of all sizes, including the Rose Festival, Ft. Vancouver’s 4th of July Celebration, Portland Sister City Association, Cinco de Mayo Festival, Portland Parks Summer Concerts, Washington Park Summer Festival, Salem Art Festival, Lake Oswego Art Festival, Hoodstock, Portland State University Cari-Fest, Salsa en la Calle Festival, Portland Community College, Lower Community College (Longview, WA) in addition to performing in various dance club venues throughout the metro area. Aguamiel has also performed for many private events, such as weddings and graduations, in which they have also included basic dance instruction in salsa, merengue and cha-cha-cha to expand their audiences’ confidence on the dance floor.
The band features Josué Benavides on vocals and guitar, Priscilla Benavides and Kimberly Kay on vocals, Martin Vélez on congas and vocals, Rod Wootan on piano and vocals, Thomas Kay on bass, James Travers on drums and timbales, Francisco Marmolejo on flute and saxophone, and the addition of new members Dave Chambers on trombone and Brett White on trumpet. These musicians have worked with such groups and musicians as; Nu Shooz, Lou Rawls’ Orchestra, The Pat Rizzo Band, Darrell Grant, Bobby Torres, Latin Expression, Linda Hornbuckle, Rubberneck, Pepe and the Bottle Blonds, Pa’lante, Conjunto Alegre, Bochinche, and Caña Son, to mention a few.
